Troy Deeney's managerial career might have got off to a slow start, but the 35-year-old says there have been offers to resume his playing career after he was sacked by Forest Green Rovers.

Deeney joined Forest Green as a player-coach over the summer before taking over as manager in December. He was gone within a month, though, shortly after being handed a touchline ban for his behaviour in a league game against Swindon Town.

His six games as a manager brought three draws and three losses, leaving FGR in danger of relegation down to the National League. They were relegated from League One last term and have failed to arrest the slide, with David Horseman dismissed before Deeney's brief spell in charge.

Despite struggling in the dugout, though, Deeney did find himself among the goals. A return of four from 16 games might not be at the level of his peak years at Watford, but he says there has already been interest.

"This [the sacking] happened on Thursday," Deeney told talkSPORT. "The offers to get back playing have, obviously, started to roll in as well.

"We have to remember that I was dropped in at the deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, dep end three weeks ago," he added. "I'm just trying to take the weekend to recalculate everything about what's been going on and we go again from Monday and we're back to business."

Deeney scored seven times in 22 Championship appearances, and believes he can still play at a higher level than League Two. He said he dropped down "for the opportunity to coach and learn," but isn't ruling out a move back up the pyramid.

"To the outside world, it's like, 'Oh, he dropped down to League Two, he can't do it anymore.' It's very the opposite to that," Deeney continued.

"Contrary to what people might think, I'm still fit and available. And I'm still very useful as a footballer. We'll see what the options are and we'll go from there."

Forest Green sit six points from safety, though they have a game in hand on Colchester, who sit directly above them. They drew with Gillingham on Saturday, with caretaker boss Dan Connor in the dugout, and host mid-table Accrington next time out.

“These are decisions nobody likes to make, but we have acted this way to give FGR the best possible chance of improving results and climbing the league table," chairman Dale Vince said after Deeney's dismissal. "We wish Troy all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts."
