Man arrested on suspicion of arson after giant inferno seen for miles

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a massive fire in a south Wales town.

The blaze broke out on an industrial estate in Bridgend last night - causing debris to rain down outside homes up to two miles away. Ten fire crews were called to tackle the large blaze at Bridgend Industrial Estate in Coychurch, off the A473.

Images showed flames and thick smoke billowing from one of the buildings on the estate, understood to be Formaction Limited on Kingsway. Local resident Joanne Howe, who lives on Brackla Hill, said she heard "multiple explosions".

South Wales police said that there were no injuries from the fire and that a 25-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He is in the process of being questioned over the incident and the force is appealing to the public for information.

A police statement read: "Shortly before 8.30pm on Friday (January 19) emergency services were called to a major fire at a property on Bridgend Industrial Estate. The building was safely evacuated and there are no reports of any injuries. The fire is now extinguished and a full investigation into the incident will begin as soon as it is safe to do so.

"Local road closures remain in place and members of the public are advised to avoid the area, especially with the forecast high winds. Efforts have also begun to enable neighbouring premises to resume business as usual when the area is secure. Local businesses and the public are thanked for their understanding and patience while this incident is dealt with. Police officers investigating the incident have made an arrest.

"A 25-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has been taken to Queen’s Road police station where he is being questioned. Detectives are appealing for anyone with any information concerning this incident to come forward, quoting reference 2400022352."

An update from the fire service said that the blaze was finally brought under control at around 8am on Saturday. Group Manager J Treherne said: "South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS), alongside South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), attended an incident at Bridgend Industrial Estate yesterday evening at approximately 20.30hrs.

"On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed fire at a substantial commercial unit. Multiple appliances and crews attended and Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire under control at approximately 08:00 hours this morning.

"Resources have been scaled back to an Aerial Ladder Platform and two Water Ladders. Crews remain at the scene and the public are advised to avoid the area until all cordens are lifted. SWFRS would like to thank the local community and our blue light partners for bringing this incident to a safe conclusion."
