Iconic singer Dolly Parton is today celebrating her 78th birthday and made a surprise announcement to mark the day.

The star announced on social media that she is releasing four never-released songs to go with the Rockstar album as well as "a few others that you may have heard before that were not on the album." Writing on Instagram, she added: "I hope you enjoy them, and I hope you all have a happy birthday for me! LOL. Thanks for everything, Dolly."

Back in 2020, Dolly also released an autobiography, "Songteller: My Life in Lyrics", giving fans a rare peek at her real hair. Known for her elaborate hairstyles and stunning figure, Dolly's wigs have become as much a part of her image as her music.

She wrote in her book: "I always wore my hair all teased up... Then as soon as I could buy those hairpieces and wigs, I wanted them." She added that they were handy and became her trademark. But the book also reveals a glimpse of her natural hair, which is just as beautiful.

On Instagram this week, Dolly treated fans to an old photo from 1965 when she joined Monument Records. It shows her singing into a microphone with her real blonde hair looking just as good as her wigs. Dolly wrote under the photo: "In case you're wondering, yes, that's my real hair."

There has also been speculation over Dolly's tattoos over the years, with Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders once describing them as "beautiful" and saying she saw them at a dinner in Los Angeles. "It was 9:30 in the evening, which meant that the restaurant was empty, because that's what happens in LA, everyone goes home, no one stays out drinking late," Jennifer said.

"And so the restaurant was empty and she just opened her jacket and showed us, can I say, the most beautiful tattoos." During an interview with CNN, Dolly admitted she has lovely pastel tattoos covering her stars.

She said: "If I have to get a scar for any reason, I never can kind of get rid of that purple look. So I thought, 'Well, I'm going to kind of decorate these with some flowers or little butterflies or whatever.'"

The country music legend, olly, who has sold more than 100 million records, had 110 charting singles, 25 No1s and published more than 3,000 songs, was one of 12 children born to Robert Lee and his wife Avie. Dolly says the family were "dirt poor", but she has fond memories of rising early to spend time with her father.

She says: "I’d let Mama sleep in and I’d get up with Daddy and pack his lunch and me and Daddy would talk and to me those hours were precious. My daddy worked like a dog, my daddy was a hard worker and worked from sun up to sun down. Daddy had to get up at four o’clock."
