Manchester United defender Raphael Varane could have to apologise to Erik ten Hag after he hinted at an unsanctioned skiing trip.

The Red Devils’ squad were granted some holiday time this week with their next game not for another ten days. They take on Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup next Sunday.

While members of the squad have jetted off to all corners of the globe, Varane appears to have taken some time off at a ski resort. The former Real Madrid star shared a picture of him in a snowy destination on his Instagram story.

People were clearly skiing in the background, an activity that has been banned by Man United officials due to the threat of injury. Later in the story, Varane also shared images of himself and his children enjoying the wintery conditions, while a video of a band serenading punters in the ski lodge

According to The Sun, a representative of Varane confirmed that he had not taken part in the extreme sport but he could still face tough questions from Erik ten Hag once he returns to Old Trafford.

Any uncomfortable conversation would mark another difficult chapter for Varane since he became a Red Devil. The Frenchman was signed for £42m in 2021.

He struggled for fitness during his debut campaign and despite making more appearances last term, was still sidelined for a good chunk of the season. The 30-year-old has so far made only 18 appearances in all competitions this season - 13 of which have been starts.

Varane has returned to start each of the last three Premier League games. The four-time Champions League winner sees his contract expire at the end of the season and Ten Hag recently made the surprise admission that they were attempting to extend his stay.

Speaking last month, he said: “We are talking with Rapha Varane and Anthony Martial. That is an internal discussion between the club and the player.”

Meanwhile, Ten Hag has also been forced to deny a bust-up with Varane after claims that the pair’s relationship had soured. Speaking in a press conference, the Dutchman said: "Rapha Varane? I don't know what you're talking about. It's rumours. Very important player, but there's internal competition and there should be at a top club, as we are.”

Varane’s former club Real Madrid were previously linked with a move for him after a long-term injury suffered by David Alaba. However, Carlo Ancelotti was forced to deny that Los Blancos were actively looking to re-sign Varane.
