Replacement for crime-drama series Vera confirmed as ITV show airs its finale
ITV drama Vera returned to screens earlier this month for its 13th season but it's already coming to an end.
The fan-favourite crime drama aired the latest series this month as DS Aiden Healy star Kenny Doughty stepped down after seven years on the show following the Christmas special. The final episode of the series, called Salt and Vinegar, comes to an end on Sunday.
Vera aired a Christmas special in December before airing the three feature-length episodes. The Brenda Blethyn series, which is usually on at 8 pm, has a new replacement to fill in the empty slot after it finishes. Vicky McClure's hit show Trigger Point will be filling in the gap.
John Williams, Head of Scheduling Strategy, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to confirm the replacement. He wrote on the platform: "Confirmed; #TriggerPoint series 2 launches on Sunday 28th Jan on @ ITV @ITVX with @Vicky_McClure Catch up with series 1 now via ITVX."
Trigger Point is returning to ITV this monthITV also took to Instagram to announce the news of Trigger Point's return. The broadcaster wrote along with a clip: "The countdown is almost over…Brand-new #TriggerPoint returns Sunday 28th January at 9pm on ITV1 and @itvxofficial." Fans were over the moon with the news and took to the comment section to share their excitement.

One user said: "The best news! Can't wait," while another viewer posted: "Terrific show - & the new series looks fantastic!!!" One happy fan commented: "Oooooh so looking forward to this [hand clapping emojis] brilliant." Earlier this month, DCI Vera Stanhope actress Brenda opened up about the possibility of a new series.
Asked about the future of the series and if she'll be back for another stint, she gave a six-word answer: "At the moment there's nothing planned." The star added: "But that’s not to say they’re not talking about it. There might be a winding up. I don’t know. Ann Cleeves is also writing her 11th Vera book. So, there’s also that to consider. But a whole series? I think not. We’ll see."
Brenda also explained she would have never returned to the show if David Leon hadn't agreed to come back.
"After we filmed The Rising Tide at the end of 2022 I didn’t want to do any more without Kenny Doughty, who had decided to leave. But I said, ‘I’ll think about it if you can see if David Leon is available to return as Joe Ashworth,'" she added. "And so they did and here I am. I was broken-hearted when David left after series four and equally overjoyed when I heard he was coming back as the relationship between Vera and Joe worked so well.
"They have all of that early history together. I wouldn’t have continued if David had not agreed to come back. I just didn’t want to start another board game with somebody else when I know I’m not going to do many more. And who would want to do it anyway?"
