King Charles’ aide reportedly called The Crown “trolling on a Hollywood budget”.

The Emmy-winning Netflix show debuted in 2016, and has focused on Queen Elizabeth’s reign - and her complicated family life - over six seasons. Claire Foy, Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman and Imelda Staunton have portrayed the Queen at different stages in her life, while Charles has been played by Josh O’Connor and Dominic West.

The storylines on the show have been inspired by real-life events, and the final two seasons focused on Charles’ crumbling marriage to Diana, Princess of Wales, and ended with her heartbreaking death in Paris in 1997. While fans of the show criticised some far-fetched scenes, including Diana visiting her former mother-in-law and ex-husband in a ghostly apparition to ease their worries about her death, even Prince Harry has stated that there is a glimmer of truth to some of the storylines.

The Royal Family have never commented on the show, and in a new book, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story by royal biographer Robert Hardman, it was alleged that Charles and other senior members of the monarchy were displeased by the publicity The Crown created. In a chapter which described Charles’ “honeymoon period” as King, it was claimed that a trailer for the fifth season of The Crown, which focused on the collapse of Charles and Diana’s marriage, had irked palace officials and ruined the first few weeks of his reign.

“As the pre-publicity inevitably triggered articles revisiting old scandals and reopening old wounds, the Palace did not engage,” he wrote, before alleging that one of Charles’ aides had made a scathing comment about the hugely successful Netflix drama. “One of his aides had called the previous series ‘trolling on a Hollywood budget’,” Robert stated, as he claimed there was “particular irritation” over the upcoming series after a throwaway remark by Harry during an interview.

Back in 2021, the Duke of Sussex told James Corden that the award-winning show was “loosely based on truth”, and was happy to watch a fictional retelling of his family history rather than read tabloid stories about them. “Of course it's not strictly accurate, but it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle - the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else - what can come from that,” Harry explained.

Meanwhile, Prince William has also reportedly refused to watch The Crown, and will never comment on his dislike for the show for fear of being seen as “a complainer”. Royal biographer Robert revealed in his book that the Prince of Wales “rolls his eyes” when people discuss the hit Netflix show, and “will not give it any greater publicity by complaining.” Instead, the father-of-three prefers to watch superhero movies, and is a big fan of Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed anti-hero Deadpool.
