Adam Scott believes the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) could soon become 'irrelevant', calling for a change in the system to meet the ever-changing landscape of professional golf.

The OWGR's legitimacy has been questioned on a number of occasions over the past two years following the rise of LIV Golf. LIV lured in some of golf's biggest names, with the likes of Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and more recently Jon Rahm signing mega-money deals.

It has come at some cost though, with the breakaway league yet to receive recognition from the OWGR, meaning the first two seasons of the league has gone on without having ranking points on offer.

Not only has the ranking overlooked the LIV setup so far, it has also been criticised for adopting a 'PGA Tour-heavy' system, with the American-based circuit taking a large chunk of OWGR points at its events compared to the likes of the DP World Tour and Asian Tour.

Scott is in DP World Tour action this week at the Dubai Desert Classic, and ahead of his return for 2024 was questioned whether he had received any feedback from his fellow players regarding the current ranking system amid his role as a Player Director on the PGA Tour's Policy Board. Despite OWGR seeming to benefit Scott on the American-based circuit, he too voiced some concerns.

"I don't need to receive that feedback because I can see it. I mean, I know and I'm not sure it's right," he said in the Middle East on Wednesday. "I mean, I think they are in a tricky spot at the moment, like everything in professional golf is kind of up for debate and discussion.

"They need to find a good system. Otherwise, I fear the World Rankings can become irrelevant." Scott's stance is one that has continuously voiced by those who compete on the LIV setup, with many of the Saudi-backed league's big names sliding down the list with no ranking points on offer.

The word 'irrelevant' has been a popular one among LIV players, with Cam Smith one of the latest to use the phrase. "It’s a hard one to let go but I feel like it’s almost become irrelevant, especially for how I’ve played," he told news.com.au last Autumn.

Smith and co have been forced to look elsewhere for ranking points, with players from the Saudi-backed league turning to events on the DP World Tour, Asian Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia in recent months. Torque GC captain Joaquin Niemann is one man in the field in Dubai this week, and has two goals in mind - to rise up the rankings and earn a Masters spot.

"It is pretty unfair right now what the world rankings shows," Niemann told Mirror Sport ahead of the event. "I am going to Dubai for the DP World [Tour] just because of [ranking] points, nothing else and to try and get into the Masters."
