Phil Mickelson has aimed a brutal dig at Tiger Woods, after the idea of an event between rivals the PGA Tour and LIV Golf was teased.

After a turbulent 2022, Mickelson is back in action this week on the Asian Tour at the Saudi International. The six-time major champion has been one of golf's most talked about names over the past 12 months, having made the controversial decision to join the LIV Golf Series last summer.

Mickelson - who spent over 30 years playing on the PGA Tour - seemingly cut all ties with the American-based circuit, having repeatedly hit out at the Tour setup since his move.

In February of last year, the six-time major champion controversially described the Saudi Arabian government as 'scary motherf*****s' during an interview with Fire Pit Collective in reference to the Middle Eastern state's dismal human rights record. He did, however, seemingly justify the Saudi's involvement with LIV Golf to 'gain leverage' on his new-found enemies at the PGA Tour.

Following his comments, Mickelson went into a four-month hiatus with the usually outspoken 52-year-old silent until confirming his spot on the LIV roster last June. Nearly 12 months on though, the days of the six-time major champion's silence are over with Mickelson returning to his usual outlandish self on social media.

On Thursday fans on Twitter were flirting with the idea of a box-office match play event between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Mickelson latched onto the social media discussion, but insisted the idea would not be happening anytime due the 'domination' the LIV roster would inflict.

He tweeted: "It sounds great, but we would dominate them so soundly and it would be over so quick that tv would have to fill an hour of dead time. That’s why it’s not happening at this time."

A number of golf fans called on old rivals Woods and Mickelson to be the playing captains of the showdown, recreating their famous rivalry. Already starting the fighting talk, Mickelson then took a brutal swipe at the 82-time PGA Tour champion, referencing Woods' inability to compete due to injuries sustained in a car accident in February 2021.

Woods has competed in just three events since the crash due to the affects of his injuries, with the American refusing to play on the PGA Tour with a cart to aid his walking around the course. Pointing fun at this, Mickelson tweeted: "Tell him [Woods] he can use a cart."

The pair have built arguably the biggest rivalry in golf, which reached its height on the course throughout the mid 2000s. The pair often found themselves going toe-to-toe at the top of leaderboards, and have 136 PGA Tour wins between them.

Off the course they are no stranger to exchanging verbals, and with both now firmly on opposite sides of golf's civil war, their rivalry has only strengthened.
