The Traitors star Ross Carson has reacted to his mother Diane Carson's departure from the show, which has been described by some viewers as "iconic" this evening.

The latest episode of the BBC show confirmed that fan-favourite Diane, 63, had been 'murdered' by the Traitors after being given a poisoned chalice. There was however a twist, as she didn't leave the castle in Scotland immediately.

It was revealed by host Claudia Winkleman that although one Faithful had been poisoned, their identity would only be confirmed at the end of the latest mission. It saw the cast participating in a funeral procession on the castle's estate.

They were given clues to their identity along the way and would get £7,000 for the prize fund if the majority could figure out who it was. At the end of the route, the group reached the "final resting place" of the Traitors' victim.

The three players who hadn't yet been ruled out - Diane, Evie Morrison and Paul Gorton - lay in coffins as the others threw roses in them to indicate their guesses. Most of them chose Diane, with it then announced that she had been 'murdered,' as the lid of the casket closed on her.

Ross - who the group aren't aware is Diane's son - said that he expected it to be her. He said in a confessional: "I had the sinking realisation that it was probably gonna be mum and I had to come to terms with that. And that's not easy."

Diane shared that she managed to secretly mouth a farewell to Ross. He also said: "It was grim. It was morbid, y'know. You don't expect to go to funerals in situations like this - let alone your mum's funeral. I really hope it's not her."

Following the news that Diane had been 'murdered,' host Claudia asked if anyone had any "final words". Ross said within the group: "I think Diane was an incredible player and I think it's a massive loss to be honest to the whole team. We'll be trying to find the Traitors tonight for sure!"

Diane said in a confessional: "I'm okay with it being me. It would have been way worse if it'd been Ross." Whilst he said in his own confessional about her: "Me and mum always said like whatever happens, keep the secret and crack on y'know. At the end of the day we wanna win this thing!"

Ross reacted to Diane's departure in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, this evening. He teased in a tweet to his followers during the episode earlier: "Don't worry guys, it's not actually real. I heard from her today… from beyond."

Fans also addressed her final scenes on the platform. One person wrote: "Diane getting the most iconic #TheTraitors exit we've ever seen." Another tweeted: "Love that Diane basically [got] the most dramatic death exit of the series."

A third fan said: "Queen Diane having the most iconic death." Someone wrote: "Diane leading her own funeral procession, like who else could leave the show like this. What an iconic way to go." Another said it was "Bafta worthy television."

One person wrote: "Iconic of Diane to have a whole funeral actually." Another said: "Diane getting the most elaborate, camp, overdramatic death of all time feels very appropriate actually." Someone said: "If anyone deserved a long drawn out death complete with Claudia dressed in her widow's weeds it was ar Diane." Another said: "I love this show."

"Diane getting the most iconic death in Traitor's history I know that's right," tweeted another person this evening. Whilst someone else commented about her departure: "I mean at least they gave Queen Diane the most iconic exit."

The Traitors airs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm. Catch up now on BBC iPlayer, with the first series and the debut series of theTraitors US also available on the platform.
