Having a “good hair day” goes a long way in boosting a woman's confidence – with 56% of females having switched up their hairstyle as many as eight times in the last 10 years, according to research.

Having freshly washed and styled hair, or changing it to a new colour they feel good about, are among the top 10 things that help ladies to feel good about themselves.

And a survey, of 2,000 women, found that more than half (51%) have tried out up to six different colours over the last decade – with brown (28%) and blonde (17%) the most popular.

Meanwhile, 15% like their hair colour to be somewhere in the middle, opting for a “bronde” look – a blend of brown and blonde.

And for those who are a bit bolder, red, silver, purple, and even multi-coloured, appeared among the top 10 shades they would choose for their locks.

It emerged that 24% get excited about changing their hairstyle – with a quarter always feeling glad when it is time to do so.

But there is a lot riding on a hairstyle, with 47% feeling nervous when making a change – and one in five even having been left in tears due to being so unhappy with a new “do”.

The research was commissioned by haircare brand, OGX, which also looked at other things that help women to feel confident – from finishing a workout, to getting praised at work, or receiving a compliment from a fellow female.

It emerged that the average woman feels confident three times a week, with 46% claiming this has increased with age – due to becoming more comfortable in their own skin, and having more life experience. And 68% have experimented with their outfits, while 67% have trialled different hair styles.

A spokesman for haircare brand, OGX, which commissioned the research, said: “Many different things boost a woman’s confidence – from appearance, to receiving a compliment from a complete stranger, to making someone laugh.

“It’s important to encourage our inner certainty, and that of others, especially as we get older – as we can reclaim our sense of self, celebrate more who we are, our identity, and what we look like.”

The study, carried out via OnePoll.com, also found that highlights (45%), perming (38%), and short layers (35%) are the most popular trend choices. And these transformations seem to have been key for later life, as 39% said they have helped them shape their identity.

Magazines were named as the biggest influence for 23%, when trying out new trends – but 22% become inspired by friends, while 19% turn to celebrities.

And 26% would use a holiday as an excuse to change their hair style, while 20% would do so for a wedding. Inspiringly, 17% have even done this after breaking up with a partner, or going through a divorce.

The spokesman for OGX added: “Hair is an integral part of our identity, and being happy with it is hugely important, as it can give us confidence and self-assurance.
