Conor McGregor urged to ditch Michael Chandler fight for UFC 300 trilogy bout

Nate Diaz is trying to tease Conor McGregor into making his UFC return against him instead of Michael Chandler.

McGregor claims his UFC comeback fight will take place against Chandler on June 29 to headline the promotion's International Fight Week. The UFC is yet to confirm the fight which has led to many fans believing it won't take place, but Chandler is confident an announcement will soon be made.

Diaz has always entertained a potential UFC return after parting ways with the promotion in September 2022. The cult hero handed McGregor his first UFC loss by choking him out on 11 days' notice in 2016. Their rematch at UFC 200 just months later was cancelled when McGregor refused to take part in his pre-fight media obligations.

McGregor and Diaz did eventually fight again later that year as the Irishman won a majority decision to avenge his defeat. "I was supposed to headline UFC 200. Headline UFC 300 would be better," Diaz wrote on Twitter, hinting at a potential UFC return to fight McGregor for the third time.

"Nate vs Conor 3 is an actual pay-per-view that I would spend money for," one fan wrote. "I agree. This is a more entertaining fight than Conor's one against Chandler anyway," a second user wrote. "Not sure why this couldn’t happen with Conor surely UFC could give them and us the trilogy and let them go off in the sunset if that’s what they want to do," a final user wrote.

Diaz lost to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in his first fight since leaving the UFC last August. It seems a UFC return is not on the cards for Diaz anytime soon as reports have linked him to a boxing match against Jorge Masvidal. The pair fought at UFC 244 in November 2019 for the inaugural 'BMF' belt as Masvidal won by doctor's stoppage.

McGregor claims his fight against Chandler will take place at middleweight, which would mark both of their debuts at the weight class. Chandler has fought at lightweight for virtually all of his MMA career, whilst McGregor started as a featherweight but has competed as high as 170lb.
