Hero Costa Coffee worker knew how to react after seeing worrying scenes outside

A coffee shop manager has been hailed a hero after he spent his morning saving two elderly people from slipping and falling in the snowy and icy conditions.

Arlo Clyne, who manages Costa Coffee in Clayton Square, Liverpool, continued hearing stories of elderly people dropping down in the street because of the ice. He decided he had to do something about it when he witnessed two elderly pedestrians fall. Grabbing a bucket and brush, he managed to carve out a path from Clayton Square to St John's Shopping Centre, allowing for safe travel. The path is now being dubbed by passers-by as “The Costa Coffee Causeway“.

The 40-year-old, who lives in Chester, told the Liverpool Echo: "When I opened up today, the city was covered in snow. People were coming in and telling me their tragic stories of the morning: train cancellations, being late for work. Looking outside, people were falling over everywhere. After witnessing two elderly pedestrians fall over due to the icy conditions, I couldn't stand by and watch these little old dears struggle. I grabbed a brush and a bucket of hot water and started scrubbing a safe path clear of danger.

"It was a really good experience and people were telling me: 'it's such a good idea' and they 'don't know why the council couldn't do it' - we haven't seen the gritters all morning. A man called it 'The Costa Coffee Causeway' and then the name stuck."

Freezing temperatures and snow will continue for much of Britain this week because of cold Arctic air before "potentially disruptive" stormy weather lands over the weekend. A "cold plunge of Arctic air" has moved south across the whole country over the past few days, making it 5C to 6C lower than usual for this time of year, the Met Office said. A Met Office spokeswoman said the low temperatures are also due to how long the cold snap has lasted.
