The Chase's Mark Labbett floored as contestants make history on game show

The Chase star Mark Labbett was quietly stunned during an episode as a group of contestants set an unexpected record.

The 58-year-old brain box - who goes by the code name The Beast on the hit ITV show - was the main Chaser during Monday’s episode. The episode saw him face off against a group of four contestants - named Ellen, Ben, Dan and Ange - who were guided through the show by 63-year-old host Bradley Walsh.

Ellen was the first to take on the Chaser - answering three correct questions in the cash builder and then managing to make it through her round. Ben then answered enough cash builder questions to be offered £9,000 on the board - an amount that he successfully won for the team’s jackpot, although The Beast was on his tail during the game.

Dan then took on The Beast to win £7,000 and he made it through to the next round with the cash in a nail-biting round - which saw Mark close in on his questions before he made it home. Finally, Ange faced the Chaser - but Mark chased her down the board and was constantly one step behind.

When Ange faced her final question, Bradley observed that each of the contestants had ended up with the Chaser on their tail before they answered correctly to get home to the team. The host remarked: "Four one-question shoot-outs right?

Mark was shocked and replied: "I don't think we've ever had this before!" However, it was not a happy result for Ange, as she got her question wrong and was caught by Mark. The remaining three contestants faced the final round where they stood to win £20,000 - but failed to win the money as Mark answered all 17 questions with 16 seconds to spare.

Viewers watching along at home were frustrated when they noticed that Ben frequently buzzed in to answer questions in the final round - only to answer the question incorrectly. One frustrated fan commented on X: "Ben was absolutely rapid on that buzzer! He got all the answers wrong mind... how not to ‘team’ #thechase," adding an angry face emoji for good measure.

Another commented: "They would have got more if Ben’s buzzer hadn’t worked #thechase." While a further fan remarked on the team's failure, writing: "That was terrible #TheChase."

However, some fans thought that the Beast had an unfair advantage, suggesting his batch of questions were easier than those faced by the team of contestants. Taking to X, one fan raged online: "#thechase Chaser questions are (always) a Joke. #Scam." Another agreed, complaining: “The chaser's questions were easy. And trick or treat on April the 1st? Really?”

Show host Bradley was also under fire from viewers, with some complaining he gave the Beast a leg up thank to his rapid questioning. One fan sighed: "Bradley doing his usual and going a bit faster for The Chaser as he does for The Beast in the final chase #TheChase."
