Cold Weather Payments triggered 550 times - see if you're owed £75 this winter

Cold Weather Payments have been triggered for over 200,000 more people as Britain is gripped by freezing temperatures.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has ordered more payments to be made in 211 postcode areas in England and Wales, giving households an extra £25 towards their heating bills. An estimated 211,000 people in Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, Northumberland, Norfolk, Staffordshire and Powys in Wales will benefit from the payments which were triggered on Saturday, January 13.

This follows payments for 10,000 people in Cumbria and Northumberland which were triggered the previous day, on Friday 12th January. In total, payments have been triggered 550 times since the start of the winter, which have resulted in the DWP handing out a total of £24.4million towards heating costs this winter.

This includes several postcode areas where more than one payment has been made. In parts of Cumbria, eligible households have received three payments, making a total of £75 towards heating costs so far this winter.

Cold Weather Payments are made to people in England and Wales who receive a range of benefits and are triggered during cold spells between November 1 and March 31. Nearly a million payments - around 976,000 so far - have now been triggered this winter in areas where the average temperature is zero or below for seven consecutive days.

Those claiming the following benefits may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment; Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, Support for Mortgage Interest.

Not everyone on these benefits will automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment. There are a number of factors which will determine whether a payment will be made and full details of those eligible are on GOV.UK.

Minister for Pensions Paul Maynard said: “Cold Weather Payments provide much needed support to households when colder weather kicks in, so that families reduce anxiety about bills. This is part of our wider plan to help those who need it the most, while our number one priority remains driving down inflation – and helping everyone’s money go further”.

The latest payments have been made in areas which are covered by nine weather stations. Here is a full list of postcode areas where payments have been made so far this winter.
