True Detective fans have said they are “obsessed” with the show’s latest season after its “astonishing” first episode. Season four of the crime anthology series – titled Night Country – premiered on Monday and has been met with rave reviews from both critics and general audiences.

Starring Oscar-winner Jodie Foster and boxer-actress Kali Reis, the six-part series centres on the disappearance of eight men who vanish without a trace while operating an Arctic research station in Alaska, and also stars Christopher Eccleston and Fiona Shaw. Its official synopsis reads: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace.

“To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

Night Country marks the first True Detective instalment without creator Nic Pizzolatto as showrunner or writer, who instead serves as executive producer with Issa López now at the helm. As showrunner, writer and director, the Mexican filmmaker told Rotten Tomatoes that she took inspiration from dark crime films including Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs when developing the series and wrote it with Foster in mind.
