Murphy urges Maguire to complete Man Utd exit and join Premier League rivals
Danny Murphy believes that Harry Maguire needs to accept this his career at Manchester United is "done" - but he could still thrive by moving to a club like Newcastle.
Maguire's long-term future at Old Trafford is in question after the 29-year-old lost his first-team spot under Erik ten Hag earlier this season. Although Maguire is still the club's official captain, he has struggled for minutes since impressing at the World Cup and has even fallen behind Luke Shaw, a left-back by trade, in the United pecking order in recent weeks.
Despite speculation linking him with a move away this month, Maguire is reportedly determined to stay and fight his way back into Ten Hag's plans.
But Murphy believes that Maguire needs to accept that his time at United is done - for the good of his career. When he was asked if Maguire still has a future at Manchester United, Murphy told talkSPORT : "No, but he has a good future somewhere else because he’s still a great talent.
"He’s got leadership qualities, he’s learnt at United. Yes, he’s had a little bad spell but a lot of it has been good. He’s done brilliantly on the international stage at big tournaments, he’s great on set-plays, he’s a good character. He’s not a 'big time Charlie', he’s humble, he looks like a great lad, good family, good support network around him. He’s going to have many takers."
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashMaguire was linked with a move to Aston Villa last week after he was spotted near the club's Bodymoor Heath training ground. While there was nothing in the links to Villa Park, Murphy believes that Newcastle, who are currently flying high in the Premier League and in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, would be interested in acquiring his services.

Murphy added: "It wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Eddie Howe went for Maguire as another choice for them. A club like Newcastle could do a lot worse than get someone like Maguire.
"His Manchester United career is done. I think it’s done. Not because he can’t do a job there but sometimes managers go another way. It looks like Erik ten Hag prefers other players."
Murphy's blunt admission comes just a fortnight after Rio Ferdinand insisted that Harry Maguire had to leave Old Trafford after Ten Hag played Shaw ahead of him for a second time.
Speaking to BT Sport before United's slender win at Wolves, Ferdinand said: "If I'm Harry Maguire, I'm looking for a new club right now. This new manager [Ten Hag] is showing by his team selection that he is not going to be one of the two, three top centre-backs at this club."
