One NHS doctor has shared a warning to Brits who are suffering from these three symptoms and are drinking coffee.

Coffee is one of the most popular hot beverages in the world and according to research conducted by the British Coffee Association, the UK now drinks approximately 98 million cups of coffee every day. Coffee is the go-to if you need a bit of an energy boost and drinking a moderate amount of coffee can offer many health benefits.

Some studies show that a cup of joe can help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, boost brain health, and aid weight loss. However, one doctor warns that you should stay away from the stuff if you suffer from these three symptoms.

Doctor Sooj, an NHS GP and A&E doctor, said you should drink less coffee if you're struggling to sleep or you're having anxiety or heart palpitations. Taking to TikTok, where he has 59,000 followers, Dr Sool explained: "If you are struggling to sleep, or you're having anxiety or heart palpitations, then please reduce the amount of coffee you're drinking. Ideally, stop it completely."

Dr Sooj did note there were health benefits to drinking coffee although he said sleep needed to be prioritised.

He added: "Coffee has a long half-life and it stays in your system way longer than you think it does. This means your morning cup of coffee is likely to still be in your system when you try to go to bed that night, and it will massively reduce the quality of your sleep."

The reason why coffee affects your sleep is because it naturally contains caffeine. Caffeine is a natural stimulant that affects your brain and nervous system. In the short term, it makes you more alert and increases attention - which is why many of us drink a cup of coffee in the morning.

According to the majority of medical studies and guidance - including the NHS, most people can safely consume around 300-400mg a day whilst pregnant women are advised to consume less at no more than 200mg. Having more than 600mg of caffeine a day has been linked to insomnia, nervousness, irritability, increased blood pressure and upset stomachs.

If you are a coffee lover, and couldn't bear the thought of cutting out your daily cup of joe, then one consideration could be switching to decaf coffee. Decaf coffee is made from regular coffee beans which goes through a process to remove the majority of the caffeine.

A typical cup of decaf coffee has about 2 mg of caffeine, compared to a typical cup of regular coffee, which has about 95 mg of caffeine according to the popular coffee brand Nescafe.

Followers of Dr Sooj welcomed his advice with many sharing their experiences of cutting down - or cutting out - the beverage. Many of his followers shared they had decided to switch to decaf. One TikTok user said: "Such simple but great advice, anyone suffering anxiety should at least switch to decaf." Another added: "I love my coffee, but I've switched to decaf."
