Manchester United are currently on the hunt for January signings.

Erik ten Hag's side have struggled throughout the first half of the campaign, with the winter window representing their final opportunity to add to their squad. The Dutchman has suggested that loan deals could potentially be in the offing.

The Red Devils have turned to temporary swoops on a few occasions in the past, while there have also been other big-money deals in January.

Ten Hag might want to take a look at the kind of fortune that the Red Devils have had in the January window over the last couple of seasons. Take a look at how Man United’s recent winter signings have performed.

Signed on a loan deal from Crystal Palace following the exit of Martin Dubravka, the former England keeper was recruited as back-up for David de Gea. He did not make a single appearance for Man United and is now with Scottish giants Rangers.

Wout Weghorst

In dire need of some attacking options (sound familiar?), the Red Devils turned to the loan market. After complicated negotiations with Burnley and Besiktas, they swooped for the services of Dutch forward Wout Weghorst.

He actually played more than expected after making 31 appearances for Man United. However, he struggled in front of goal by finding the back of the net just twice.

Marcel Sabitzer

Arguably the most successful of the Red Devils’ three January deals 12 months ago, the Austrian midfielder arrived from Bayern Munich. He made 18 appearances for the Red Devils - scoring twice in the Europa League draw with Sevilla at Old Trafford.

Despite an option to buy being slotted into the deal, Man United chose not to activate it. Sabitzer eventually left Bayern Munich and signed for rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Amad

Confirmed during the first week of the January window three years ago, the Ivorian winger was a surprise arrival from Atalanta. An initial £19m fee could potentially rise to around £37m.

The 21-year-old has made just ten appearances for the Red Devils but shone on loan at Sunderland last season ahead of sustaining a long-term injury.

January 2020

Bruno Fernandes

Arguably Manchester United’s greatest-ever January signing. The Portuguese arrived from Sporting Lisbon amid a rotten first half of the season for the Red Devils.

Fernandes' inspired form single-handedly fired Man United into the Champions League. He has remained a key figure at Old Trafford since and is now the club's captain. Fernandes penned a new deal in April 2022 so looks set to stay with the club for the foreseeable future.

Nathan Bishop

After making his name at Southend United, Nathan Bishop made a dream move to Old Trafford in the same month as Fernandes. He went straight into the youth ranks, while a loan move to Mansfield earned him valuable experience.

The stopper only left Man United in the most recent summer window as he joined Sunderland on a permanent deal and he has just one appearance to his name so far.

Odion Ighalo

Previously of Watford, it was a surprise to see the Red Devils make a move for Nigerian forward Ighalo on a loan deal from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua. He became somewhat of a cult hero at Old Trafford as he scored five goals in 20 games, while his loan was also extended to the following January.

Ighalo left for Saudi side Al-Shabab and has stayed in the Gulf state ever since with switches to Al-Hilal and Al-Wehda. He has a stunning record in Saudi with 73 goals in 106 games.

January 2018

Alexis Sanchez

While Fernandes was one of the club’s best-ever January signings, the same cannot be said of Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean forward arrived from Arsenal in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

There was great acclaim after the Red Devils edged rivals Man City in the race for Sanchez. He scored just five goals for the club before joining Inter Milan on loan before a permanent switch. Sanchez had a brilliant season at Marseille last season before he returned to the Italian giants in the most recent summer window.

January 2015

Victor Valdes

A Barcelona icon, Spanish goalkeeper Valdes arrived at Old Trafford in January 2015 as back-up to De Gea. He had to wait until the end of that campaign to make his debut for the Red Devils as he came on in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal.

Valdes then made his first start the following week against Hull City. They were the only appearances he made for Man United before moves to Standard Liege and Middlesbrough - where he retired.

Sadiq El Fitouri

A product of the Manchester City youth team, El Fitouri moved to Salford City for a season. Part-owners Phil Neville and Paul Scholes were impressed and recommended him to Red Devils scouts.

He eventually penned an 18-month contract with Man United but did not manage to break into the first team. The defender has gone on to play for Chesterfield, Al-Ahli Tripoli, Politehnica Iași, Al-Hilal Omdurman and Maine Road FC.

Andy Kellett

At the time a young player at Bolton, the midfielder joined the Red Devils on a loan deal that saw Saidy Janko go in the opposite direction. Kellett stayed in the club’s youth ranks before a journeyman career that has seen him since representing Chesterfield, Wigan, Notts County, Fylde, Alfreton, Guiseley and Bury.
