A new book that details the last moments of Queen Elizabeth II has refuted earlier claims made by Prince Harry suggesting no one told him his beloved grandmother had died.

The Duke of Sussex had, by chance, been in the UK to attend the WellChild Awards in September 2022, when the monarch fell ill. Upon news the monarch had fallen unwell he boarded a plane in a race against time and flew north to be at her bedside. Tragically, before he could arrive to say goodbye.

He previously suggested, in his book Spare, he found out on BBC News. However a new book, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, by Robert Hardman, has refuted the claims made by the fifth in line to the throne.

In a serialisation in MailOnline, he wrote: “The Duke of Sussex was still in the air and out of contact. In his memoir, Spare, he suggests that no one had told him and that he was reduced to learning the news from the BBC website as the plane was landing. Not exactly.

“A member of the Palace staff says that the King had been urgently trying to make contact with his younger son. ‘There were repeated attempts to get through to him but no calls were going through because Harry was airborne,’ says the official.”

Harry’s recollection in his own book read: “When the plane started to descend, I saw my mobile phone light up. It was a message from Meg: 'call me as soon as you read this'. I checked the BBC webpage. My grandmother had died. My father was the King. I put on a black tie, and stepped off the plane into heavy drizzle.”

The new tome also describes the heartbreaking way Charles was told his mother had died and the moment he became King. The then Prince Charles, and other members of the royal family rushed to Balmoral amid doctors' concerns over the late Queen's health. After sitting with his mother, Charles went to gather mushrooms in the estate’s sprawling land with Camilla and several members of staff as at her bedside.

He was driving back when he discovered he was the new monarch. Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, by Robert Hardman, claims he realised the worst had happened when the Queen’s private secretary addressed him as “Your Majesty” for the first time.
