Southgate tipped for Man Utd job

Three-time Premier League winner Robert Huth believes England boss Gareth Southgate could become Manchester United's next manager if Erik ten Hag is sacked.

"Sometimes you need to be harsh and say it as it is. I don't know if that is what Manchester United need, because I just don't know where they are at the moment," Huth told Instant Casino. "They've had successful managers in the past, but they haven't worked out for whatever reason either.

"It is a difficult one to work out, but I am sure Gareth would go for it if the situation were to arise. Not many managers turn down Manchester United, that is for sure."

Olise blow

Manchester United's hopes of making Michael Olise the first signing of the Jim Ratcliffe era won't be straightforward, with former Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce claiming he could see the youngster at United's neighbours.

Olise turned down interest from Chelsea over the summer, signing a new deal with Crystal Palace. Mirror Football understands that deal includes a release clause in the region of £60m, due to take effect at the end of the season, but the France under-21 star has already attracted plenty of attention since returning from injury in the autumn.

Despite playing just nine games, Olise is just one goal adrift of Palace top scorer Odsonne Edouard with five in the league. He has helped make up for the summer departure of Wilfried Zaha as Roy Hodgson's side look to keep their heads above water. Even without a release clause, summer interest in the former Reading star was always going to be likely. In Pearce's mind, though, City is the obvious move.

"Not Man United… Man City," Pearce told talkSPORT when asked about Olise making the step up. "I looked at the way he played against Chelsea especially, he got beaten on the night but he was by far the best player on the pitch in my opinion. The way he dealt with the ball, his understanding of when to keep the ball, all of those type of things. I could see him in a City shirt."

Fernandez set to join Benfica

Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez is set to return from a loan spell at Granada and join Benfica.

Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho have already left Erik ten Hag’s side this month to join Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund respectively on loan for the rest of the season.

Hannibal Mejbri is set to join Sevilla on loan with a view to buy having also attracted interest from Everton and Joe Hugill has joined Burton for the rest of the season fresh from extending his United contract.

Facundo Pellistri and Dan Gore are others attracting interest, while left-back Fernandez looks set to head to Portuguese giants Benfica.

The 20-year-old Spaniard joined from Real Madrid in 2020 but has yet to make a first-team appearance for United, spending last season on loan at Preston before joining Granada this term.

The process has now begun to recall Fernandez from the LaLiga outfit ahead of an expected move to Benfica, with the breakdown of the deal yet to be nailed down.

A potential 10 million euros (£8.6m) permanent move has been mentioned in the Portuguese media and a loan with clauses has also been under discussion.

Sancho has "latest ever medical"

Jadon Sancho jokingly apologised to Borussia Dortmund staff after sealing a move back to the club.

The Manchester United forward penned a six-month loan deal with the German side earlier this week. It signals his return to action after being banished from the Red Devils’ first-team under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

While he will have been keen to get back to action for Dortmund, his medical appears to have been completed just before midnight on Wednesday - with the move confirmed on Thursday. A video shared by the German side shows Sancho apologising, with a voice off-camera heard saying “latest medical check ever”, to which the forward replied: “Sorry guys, I'm sorry.”

Youngster completes loan move

Manchester United striker Joe Hugill has joined League One side Burton Albion on loan for the rest of the season.

"It's a great opportunity for me," Hugill said. "As my first football league loan I'm really excited for it and looking forward to getting going. I can't wait to experience men's first-team action and getting as much experience and games under my belt and hopefully score some goals.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting the lads and getting going. Burton is a family club and I'm very family oriented myself which played a huge part in me coming here. I know a couple of the boys who are already here and they've been really positive about the place.

"I spoke to Mark Helm as soon as there was interest and straight away he said what a good club it is and I'm buzzing to get going." Burton boss Martin Paterson added: "We're really happy to get the loan signing of Joe over the line.

"A lot of hard work has been put in behind the scenes by Gary and the team to make this move happen, fighting off a lot of competition from other clubs to sign him on loan. I briefly worked with him at Barnsley when he came in on work experience and you could see his potential then.

"We want to thank Manchester United for trusting us with the development of a player they have high hopes for. I pride myself on developing strikers and I think Joe can be a really good addition to us."

Ten Hag defends transfer record

Erik ten Hag has defended his Manchester United transfer record and said his team will be back to their best once key players return from injury.

Ten Hag has spent £400million since taking over at United, but this season they have regressed against a backdrop of long-term injuries to key players and some high-profile off-field disciplinary issues. Defending his signings against accusations United have overspent on mediocre players, Ten Hag said: “I know everything is highlighted more at the moment, because the performances aren't there.

“But don’t forget, last season everyone was saying how the signings for Manchester United were very good because, as a team, we performed. Everyone was saying how great Martinez was doing, everyone was telling me Eriksen was a top signing. Tyrell Malacia? Very smart. Then we had Antony, who was doing okay. Casemiro? Brilliant, everyone was saying last season. So we must judge them in the moment.”

Earps tipped for Man Utd exit

Mary Earps could still leave Manchester United for a move to Arsenal, claims former England striker Jill Scott.

The future of United No.1 Earps has been under heavy speculation with the 30-year-old's current contract with the Red Devils set to expire in the summer. A protracted contract saga has left the door open for a rival club to swoop in for Earps in the summer.

And just six months after the Gunners' world-record bid for a women's goalkeeper was rejected by United, Earps has been tipped for a move to north London. "I do think she might go to Arsenal," Scott, 36, told the Overlap.

The Euro 2022 champion added: "Transfers happen on performances and then the Arsenal manager will put in a bit of interest. There will be a lot of asking the girls at England, 'What's she like?' But with players like Mary, a lot of it is out there anyway and with her personality."

Ten Hag sends Sancho message

Erik ten Hag has wished Jadon Sancho well at Borussia Dortmund despite their public spat at Manchester United.

The Red Devils’ winger completed a loan return to Borussia Dortmund on Thursday afternoon. He has penned a deal until the end of the season, while there is no option to buy clause.

The German side are set to pay around €4m (£3.4m) which includes a loan fee and a partial contribution to Sancho’s lofty wages. He could potentially make his second debut for the club in Saturday’s Bundesliga showdown with Darmstadt.

Ten Hag has now spoken out on the deal and has wished the winger good fortune back in Germany. Speaking in a press conference ahead of this weekend’s clash with Tottenham, the Dutchman said: "I hope he's doing well, so I wish him the best of good luck. That's it. I hope he's doing well and he'll be a success."

Why Sancho is to blame for failed Kane transfer

Back in 2021, Manchester United had a decision to make over whether they would pursue a transfer for Jadon Sancho or Harry Kane.

Both players were attracting attention from several clubs across the continent and neither of them were going to come cheap, so what was then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils side had to pick one and streamline their efforts. As history shows, they opted to land Sancho's signature that summer, rather than Kane's.

It has since been proved the wrong call. Kane remained at Tottenham for a further two years, where he continued to excel and fire goals in for fun, before eventually joining German giants Bayern Munich. In his debut season in the Bundesliga, the England captain is sitting on 21 goals in 15 league games.

Meanwhile, in that same time frame, Sancho arrived at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £73million. He has managed just nine league goals in that time, six less than Kane's tally for this season alone, six league assists and then suffered a complete breakdown in his relationship with current boss Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag defends signings

Erik ten Hag has defended his Manchester United transfer record and said his team will be back to their best once key players return from injury.

Ten Hag said: “I know everything is highlighted more at the moment, because the performances aren't there.

“But don’t forget, last season everyone was saying how the signings for Manchester United were very good because, as a team, we performed.

“Everyone was saying how great Martinez was doing, everyone was telling me Eriksen was a top signing.Tyrell Malacia? Very smart.

“Then we had Antony, who was doing okay. Casemiro? Brilliant, everyone was saying last season. So we must judge them in the moment.

“I think all the signings are top players. What we have to do now is find a way to perform as a team and then we will judge them very differently.

“We have to understand and acknowledge we have to do it together. We have to be on the same page, in the same boat."

Man Utd injury boost

Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez are set to make their long-awaited returns for Manchester United this weekend.

“We have had a lot of injuries,” said Ten Hag. “So this week in training, the last couple of days, Licha Martinez is training, Casemiro is training, Luke Shaw is training. So there are players returning and they are coming in for selection for Sunday. Antony, also.

“Christian Eriksen was ill in the week, he will return. Antony will return. Amad will return. We have more choices in this moment in the squad to put out a starting eleven and create a bench that is stronger. Tyrell Malacia will return as well, Victor Lindelof is also on his way back but it will take some weeks and takes time to get back into match fitness.

"I'm not sure it's the word relief. First it has to happen they are back, but it is positive they are back on the training ground and that they go back to the team and then to 100 per cent match fitness. When I talk about Martinez returning, Casemiro returning, for instance, but they were a long time away, Mason Mount will return, but will take a little longer.”

Crouch's Man Utd prediction

Peter Crouch doesn't think Manchester United will beat Tottenham on Sunday.

"Son is away, but I still don't think United will get the job done, personally no, so I've gone for a draw, 1-1," Crouch told his podcast.

ICYMI: United eye Brobbey

Erik ten Hag is keeping tabs on Ajax striker Brian Brobbey as Manchester United begin to plan their summer transfer window.

The Old Trafford boss has worked with the Dutch striker in the past as he handed him his debut at Ajax in 2020. Ten Hag remains confident he will remain as United manager and is already starting to think about how he can bolster his attack in the summer.

The Dutchman also wants to bring in a forward in January but the club’s financial position means that will only be a loan. That would rule out a move for Brobbey, 21, in this window unless United can suddenly raise funds.

But they will continue to scout the Holland international as a potential striker to compete with Rasmus Hojlund. Anthony Martial is expected to leave this summer when his contract expires so United will need another front man.

Sagna on Varane

Bacary Sagna has admitted he is "surprised" by Raphael Varane's limited amount of game time at Manchester United. Varane has started two Premier League matches since September.

The Frenchman told Mirror Football and Lord Ping: "I am surprised by Raphael Varane’s limited amount of game time at Manchester United this season. I know Varane well; I know his qualities and what he can give to the team. He is a leader. He has won so many trophies.

"When you lose your place in the starting line-up and your replacement plays well, it is always difficult to regain your place in the team. It also makes the manager’s decision to pick you harder.

"There can be no questions about his ability as a player and his quality. I think he is still one of the top central defenders in the world. I still think that Raphael Varane can play a massive role at Manchester United this season and is one of Erik ten Hag’s most important players."

Hugill expected to join Burton

Manchester United striker Joe Hugill is expected to join Burton on loan today, according to Manchester Evening News.

The 20-year-old signed a new contract with United until 2026 earlier this week and could make his Burton debut against Derby on Monday, if the paperwork is sent through on time.

Fofana eyed

Manchester United have identified Youssouf Fofana as a potential replacement for Sofyan Amrabat when the Moroccon returns to Fiorentina this summer.

That's according to Fijaches, who report Fofana is on United's radar after impressing for Monaco and he could prove to be a solid acquisition to the Red Devils' back-line.

Gray on Man Utd's radar

Archie Gray is enjoying a breakout year at Leeds United, with the 17-year-old midfielder having made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Whites.

Naturally, this has led to transfer links to other clubs, with Liverpool recently said to be eyeing a £40m move for the England under-20 international.

The latest club to be credited with an interest in Gray are Leeds’ arch-rivals Manchester United, with Spanish website Fichajes claiming that the Whites’ academy product is on the Red Devils’ radar after they opted against turning Sofyan Amrabat’s loan into a permanent deal.

However, with Man Utd undergoing a restructure following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment into the club, it is unlikely that any move for Gray will be forthcoming in the short-term.

United eyeing Brobbey

By Chris McKenna

Erik ten Hag is keeping tabs on Ajax striker Brian Brobbey as Manchester United begin to plan their summer transfer window.

Sancho's shirt number revealed as Man Utd flop finalises Borussia Dortmund return

Jadon Sancho will wear the No.10 shirt at Borussia Dortmund after sealing his return from Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has re-joined the Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season, having found an escape route from United. Sancho has not played a single minute of competitive football since August, after being banished from the club's first-team squad by manager Erik ten Hag.

He has trained on his own as he waited patiently for the January transfer window, before now securing a move away from Old Trafford - two-and-a-half years after his £73million move to Manchester. Sancho played for Dortmund between 2017 and 2021, scoring 50 goals and grabbing 64 assists in 137 matches.

Now, Sancho is back at Dortmund on loan until the summer, though he will return to United at the end of the season as the Bundesliga outfit cannot afford to make his move permanent. However, United are hoping Sancho can rediscover his form at The Black and Yellow so that his transfer value increases.

ICYMI - Neville on Casemiro signing

Gary Neville has admitted Manchester United's move to sign Casemiro "should never have gone through" as he criticised the club's recruitment process.

He told the Stick to Football podcast: "That signing should never have gone through a good sporting director, owner or head of recruitment. That should never have gone through that signing, in my opinion.

"That should be vetoed. Bang! He doesn’t fit the long-term. The wages are crazy and the length of the contract is crazy."

Man Utd legend aims dig at Erik ten Hag as "stupid and messy" Jadon Sancho saga finally ends

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been blasted for his handling of Jadon Sancho with the winger re-joining Borussia Dortmund on loan.

The Red Devils boss has come under fire from club legend Paul Ince, who insisted that the dispute between the player and manager should never have been played out in public.

Speaking to luckyblock.com, Ince explained: "I don’t know exactly what went on behind the scenes, but what I do know is that when this situation happened, I never would have aired it out in public for the fans and media to hear.

Sancho on Dortmund move

Jadon Sancho said it felt like “coming home” after he ended his Manchester United exile by returning to former club Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho has joined Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season, following his spectacular fall-out with boss Erik ten Hag, who banished him from training or eating with the first-team squad.

Dortmund have paid United a loan fee of £3million and could end up paying an extra £3.4m in add-ons, if certain performance-related clauses within the agreement are met.

Sancho said: “When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like coming home.

“I know the club inside and out, I've always been very close with the fans here and I've never lost contact with those in charge.

“I can’t wait to see my team-mates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”

Sancho move confirmed

Jadon Sancho’s loan move to Borussia Dortmund has been confirmed by Manchester United.

Sancho’s United exile, following his spectacular fall-out with Erik ten Hag, has ended with his return to his former club until the end of the season.

Dortmund have no option to buy at the end of the agreement, but are contributing €3.5m, rising up to €4m in add-ons subject to appearances and success, such as Champions League progress and qualification.

Man Utd interested in David

Manchester United are interested in a deal for Lille striker Jonathan David, according to reports.

As per Football Transfers, as per Evening Standard, the Canadian forward has been a long-term target at Old Trafford. He currently has a £34m price tag.

However, the Red Devils face competition for him from Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Lingard blow

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has dealt a blow in his hopes of finding a new club.

It comes after West Ham ruled out the chance of signing Lingard this month, as per the Daily Mail.

Silvestre on Ten Hag

Mikael Silvestre believes Erik ten Hag deserves time to turn Manchester United's form around, after an up and down first half of the campaign.

He told GGRecon: "I believe that Erik ten Hag deserves time. There are still players to come back from injury and he deserves to be given the opportunity to show what he can do with an entirely fit squad.

"He's also had to deal with the situations surrounding Mason Greenwood, Antony and Jadon Sancho. Marcus Rashford’s confidence has been another issue for him, but ultimately this season, he’s not had a full squad to work with and that would be a disadvantage for any manager.

"Erik needs to be given a good structure to work with and he needs to be allowed to improve the team again. If he’s given the time to do this, then this should enable him to play the sort of football that he expects from his team. He still needs to be given time."

Neville on Casemiro signing

Gary Neville has admitted Manchester United's move to sign Casemiro "should never have gone through" as he criticised the club's recruitment process.

He told the Stick to Football podcast: "That signing should never have gone through a good sporting director, owner or head of recruitment. That should never have gone through that signing, in my opinion.

"That should be vetoed. Bang! He doesn’t fit the long-term. The wages are crazy and the length of the contract is crazy."

Man Utd 'keep close tabs' on Hjulmand

Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Sporting Lisbon star Morten Hjulmand.

According to The Sun, United are hopeful of landing him and will use international team-mate Christian Eriksen to try and convince him to move to Old Trafford.

However, Hjulmand won't be cheap. Sporting inserted a release clause of £69million in his contract when he joined the club from Lecce over the summer.
