A vegan has shared her upset after claiming she was kicked out of a New York bar for wearing a real fur coat. Multimedia artist, Alexandra Yvette, who has 199k followers on TikTok, took to the video-sharing platform to tell how a recent visit to a ‘speakeasy-style’ venue in the city had resulted in her allegedly being asked to leave the premises.

With more than 604k views, the video sees the content creator explain how a vintage 1930s mink coat had caused the controversy. She said: “I feel like I didn't get the memo that wearing fur in New York is, I guess, really offensive.” She continued: “I walked up to this bar, a speakeasy, and the man was like ‘Is your coat real?’ and I was like yes it's real, it's really old, it's from the 30s'.”

After potentially expecting a compliment on what she was wearing, she was shocked to receive a request to leave instead: “'That doesn't matter,” said the doorman. “Fur is not allowed here. You need to leave'. After thinking he was joking, she asked him 'Really?' to which he replied: 'Yes, please go'.

Alexandra went on to say she felt it was morally justified to wear real fur, as long as it was vintage: “I know some people don't agree with that, but personally, it's never bothered me. I would never buy a fur coat new.”

She also admitted the situation made her feel like bursting into tears on the spot: “It was such an intense moment. I almost wanted to cry, because it just felt like such a weird rejection and then I was questioning my morals.”

With more than 3,000 comments, followers were quick to support her stance on vintage fur being more ethical, with many agreeing it was better than letting it go to landfill: “Even as a vegetarian I’m cool with vintage fur because it’s better than it going to waste,” said one, while another agreed, commenting: “I believe buying second-hand real fur and leather is more sustainable than buying brand new vegan clothes.”

One commenter told how they had bought a fur coat from a charity shop only to get shamed by someone working there, while another said: “Everyone wears Canada Goose in the city though with no issue. Sigh.”

One joked: “I love this style of activism. Solves nothing, creates zero change, actively loses them money, allows them to feel superior over something pointless”. However some commenters thought she had over-reacted, with one saying: “It’s extremely common for bars, clubs, and speakeasies in NYC to have a dress code” and another saying they thought: “It's really not that weird of a rejection.”
