Jon Rahm has broken his silence after missing out on the PGA Tour's Player of The Year award for 2023 to world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler became the first player since Tiger Woods to win the Player of The Year award in successive years after receiving the prize earlier this month. Scheffler ended the year as the world's top golfer, along with two wins at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Hero World Challenge.

Despite ending the campaign in the world No. 1 spot, Scheffler's win came as a surprise to some, with Rahm backed by many to land the award after winning four times in 2023.

One of those four also came at Augusta National, as Rahm became Masters champion for the very first time last April. Elsewhere, the Spaniard won The Sentry Tournament of Champions, the American Express and the Genesis Invitational in a year to remember.

According to his peers though, this was not enough, with rival Scheffler earning the majority of the vote. And whilst Rahm appeared to commend Scheffler's efforts, it appears that the Spaniard feels hard done by having won more than anyone else in 2023.

"Oh man, listen, Scottie had a fantastic year," he told the Jim Rome Show. "I don’t want to take away anything from what he did, but historically, hardware is what’s won basically the player of the year. “The year Patrick Cantlay won, I was basically the more consistent player.

"In 2021, [I] had a major, I think I had 16 top-10s that year and I fully understood why Patrick won it. It’s just maybe this year because of his high level of ball-striking, [the voters] decided to go in a different direction, but at the end of the day, it’s well earned.”

The decision came after Rahm opted to join with the Tour's great rivals, LIV Golf last month, having a signed a reported £450 million deal with the breakaway league. On the back of his decision to make the Saudi switch, he followed the same fate as the rest of his LIV colleagues in being suspended by the PGA Tour.

The Tour's loss is of course LIV's gain, and it seems his fellow players on the breakaway circuit are more than happy to have the Masters champion competing alongside them. Welcoming the Spaniard, Bryson DeChambeau told LIVGolf.com: "It is so awesome to have Jon Rahm over here.

"I cannot wait for him to experience what we've experienced for the past couple of years. … Once he gets settled in, he's going to see how cool this product is. And not only just how cool the product is, but how good the competition is and how fiery we all are and how much we all want to win and how competitive we are. He's going to feel that competitive vibe immediately when he gets out there."
