Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a woman who was imprisoned for her role in killing her controlling mum, has confessed that she attempted to murder her long before she met the man who would ultimately take her mother's life.

In a docu-series, Gypsy Rose revealed that she tried to shoot her abusive mum with a BB gun her mum had purchased, but after firing multiple times, she realised the weapon was not lethal.

In the Lifetime docu-series, "The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard," she recalls how in 2011, when she escaped to be with a man she'd met at a sci-fi and fantasy convention, her mum brought her back home and chained her to the bed for two weeks. Then, her mum, Dee Dee Blanchard, bought a gun.

Gypsy Rose, who was virtually held captive by her mum through manipulation, said years of abuse made her increasingly desperate to leave. She shared how her mum found her packed bag and confronted her when she decided to run away again.

Blanchard grabbed the gun and threatened her mum with it. She said: "And before I knew it, I pulled the trigger as many times as I could." The distressed girl fired at her mum 10 times, but only when she noticed her mum's wounds were minor did she realise the gun was a BB and not a deadly handgun.

The former prisoner revealed, "Why won't you let me have a normal life? Why is my life this way to begin with? She kept reiterating that she takes care of me and I need special care." Blanchard also admitted feeling powerless, stating: "My mom was such a good master manipulator that she was able to slip me right back into submission again."

Sharing her turbulent feelings after the shooting, Blanchard said she was relieved not to have murdered her mother but was also angered. Adding to the confusion, her mum, Dee Dee, twisted the truth yet again for sympathy, claiming they were shot by a robber at a Walmart parking lot.

Her mother is suspected to have had a rare psychological disorder known as factitious disorder imposed on another or Munchausen syndrome by proxy. This condition led Dee Dee into imposing unnecessary and agony-filled medical procedures on her daughter for imagined illnesses.

Dee Dee deceived everyone saying her daughter was battling epilepsy, leukaemia, and muscular dystrophy, forcing her to rely on a feeding tube. The deception went to the extent of shaving her head and making her wheelchair-bound. Blanchard confessed she could walk unaided but played along with her mother's deceit in public.

As Blanchard got older and wanted to be on her own, she said her mum got really strict. She told the interviewer: "That scared the ever-living 'f' out of me. I was afraid that she would kill me... I was afraid she would do something worse than hitting me or starving me."

Then, after meeting Nick Godejohn online, Blanchard thought he was her "Prince Charming". She started to see her mum as a baddie in their story and thought the only way out was to have her killed.

Godejohn did the deed at Dee Dee's house in Springfield, Missouri, on June 9, 2015. Gypsy Rose hid in the bathroom while it happened. They ran away but were caught by the police. In 2016, Gypsy Rose said she was guilty of second-degree murder and got 10 years in jail, but she got out early last month. Godejohn got life in jail for first-degree murder.
