Lidl issues 'do not eat' warning and recalls meat product after labelling error

Lidl has issued a "do not eat" alert and recalled one of its food items due to am major labelling error.

The discount supermarket chain's Northern Irish stores are recalling its "The Deluxe Irish Carved Peppered Turkey Breast" weighing at 130g. The recall notice comes as the packaging had a use-by date reading '"Jun 25" but it should have said "Jan 25". Lidl Northern Ireland confirmed the recall adding that no other use by dates or Deluxe products were affected by the notice.

Customers who have bought the product are being advised not to eat it. Lidl stated: "Our supplier, Flamewood is recalling the above Deluxe Irish Carved Peppered Turkey Breast due to the incorrect use by date printed on the product. The use by on 25 Jan. No other use by dates or Deluxe products are affected."

If you have bought the recalled item, you can return the turkey to the store you originally bought it from for a full refund, with or without a receipt. To warn shoppers of the possible risks of eating the product, Lidl has displayed point of sale notices in all stores that are selling this product. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled.

What are recall notices?

Products can be recalled for a range of different reasons including safety – if a product displays risks for the customer – or quality – when the product isn't working as it should be.

The Food Standards Agency is in charge of issuing alerts when there is a problem with a food product. The product can either be "withdrawn" which is where is it taken off the shelves or "recalled" which is when customers are asked to return it.

Food products need to be recalled if they are found to have been contaminated with pathogens that could cause food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been found in the product due to manufacturing faults. Food items also need to be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
