A young couple got back together - after strangers sent them £110 in free booze at a Wetherspoons.

Lottie Camm and Trystan Bithell had dated for 18 months until their split in October last year. When they were together, they had booked a trip to Blackpool, Lancashire, for December 16 to see the Illuminations and were gutted to discover the hotel stay was non-refundable.

To avoid losing the cash, plastering student Lottie, 18, suggested the pair go on the trip as friends and 21-year-old joiner carpenter Trystan agreed. They agreed one would kip on the couch in their hotel room.

After spending the day hitting the arcades, walking along the beach and looking at the lights, Lottie and Trystan decided to decamp to a nearby Wetherspoon boozer "to take the edge off". At the pub, Lottie uploaded a post to Facebook to play 'The Wetherspoons Game' where people share a photo, their location and table number and wait to see if anyone buys them a drink.

After realising they were exes, hopeless romantics on social media flooded the post with comments claiming they were "strangely invested" and rooting for the pair to reunite, splashing out £110 on booze - including six pitchers of Sex on the Beach. During their three-hour visit to The Albert and The Lion, the pair talked and credit their fun boozy chats that they didn't spend a penny on for helping them get back together.

Lottie, from Wrexham, Wales, said: "We were together for a year and a half before we broke up at the end of October. We just drifted apart. I ended things over the phone, it was quite amicable. We booked [the trip] about six months ago, we just wanted to go see the lights. I was like 'I'll see if I can cancel it' but we couldn't. I still wanted to go, it was a really hard decision. I was like 'right I'll just ask him and see if he still wants to go' and he did so we went."

Despite it being an amicable break-up, Lottie admitted it was an "awkward" trip to begin with. The student said: "In the lead up to going to Blackpool I was quite nervous because we got on but there was still that tension there and I was worried it was going to be awkward.

"It was a bit awkward to begin with but once we settled into the car ride and put some music on it was ok. There was a little sofa in the hotel room so one of us could have slept there. Getting back together was completely off the cards for me, but he did [hope we would].

"It was quite awkward to start with because we weren't together. We walked into the town centre, did a couple of fair rides and went to the arcades. [Then] we were like 'we'll go to Spoons to take the edge off'. It was my idea to play the game. My dad told me about it. I tried to do it before but we got declined, we thought 'we'll try and if anyone sends us a drink it's a bonus, we've got nothing to lose'. People started buying us drinks within minutes of the post being accepted. I looked at my phone and there were hundreds of laugh reactions and comments.

"Where we were sat we could see their TV screen that has orders coming through. We were on table 41 [and they kept coming through]. People bought us Sex on the Beach pitchers to start with and we were like 'oh my god this is great'. We got well over £110-worth of drinks easily. They turned the post off after only 23 minutes of it being up.

"It was amazing, we couldn't believe it was happening to us. We were chatting and drinking at this point - we were getting on so much better because we were in such high spirits. It was just like 'shall we get back together?' and over the next few days we rekindled our relationship.

"It was amazing to see so many people rooting for us to get back together. To those kind-hearted strangers who bought us a drink, thanks so much. I definitely credit them with helping us get back together. My advice to anyone struggling in their relationship is to get down to Blackpool and the nearest Wetherspoon and see if the magic works for them too."

Trystan said: "When she rang me and called it quits I was distraught, I always hoped there was a way for us to get back together. When she mentioned about the Blackpool trip I was thinking 'oh my God yeah I definitely still want to go'.

"She was making it clear 'we're just going as friends'. I was like 'ok, if that's what you're saying'. I was secretly hoping I could woo her back. I saw Wetherspoons as the turning point for us. We probably spoke more in those three hours than we did over the whole month we'd broken up. I just had the feeling 'I really want to be with her'.

"I'd never heard of The Wetherspoons Game before. I thought she was being deluded, I was like 'this isn't going to work, you think anyone's going to buy us drinks?' When people started buying us loads of drinks I was amazed, I was thinking 'this is nuts'. I felt like an influencer. It was quite heartwarming with everyone rooting for us and making us feel so special.

"I definitely credit being at Wetherspoons, having that time together and strangers buying us drinks, for helping us get back together. It was definitely a turning point for us."

Lottie's post, which racked up more than 1,100 likes, shares and comments, read: "Just 2 ex’s [sic] drinking in Spoons as the trip to Blackpool was non-refundable lol. First-time players will return. Not fussy just need this trip to be bearable PLEASE. Thank you In advance."
