Baldur's Gate 3 Xbox update will finally put an end to save woes

Players on Xbox have been plagued by a glitch that could see their saves wiped since Baldur’s Gate 3 launched back in December, but according to Larian Studios, it’s set to be solved soon.

By now it’s been well documented that players on Xbox Series X who were looking forward to playing Baldur’s Gate 3 haven’t been able to safely do so. The culprit is an issue that, though rare, could see your progress wiped after experiencing a crash, due to the save file not properly being registered at a hardware level. Up until now, developer Larian Studios has offered players an awkward, multi-step fix that utilises the game’s cross-save functionality, but the madness finally looks set to end soon.

That’s according to Larian Studios itself, who shared an update from its official Twitter account explaining that “Microsoft have identified the cause of the save bug on Xbox, and will be issuing a firmware update to fix it”. Microsoft had already stepped in previously before the Christmas break to try and resolve the save issue alongside the team at Larian, but problems persisted. That is… up until now? Hopefully.

The good news is that it doesn’t look like Xbox players will be forced to wait much longer to find out. Those wanting to scrub the problem out for good can “update [their] console manually on the 16th of January”, Larian Studios advised in the same Tweet. Those who want to let nature take its course, however, can simply “wait a week longer for the update to roll out globally” where the firmware fix will be performed automatically.

Save the day

It seems like, despite the relatively smooth launch of Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC and PS5, the Xbox version of the game simply can’t catch a break. After all, only last week was it made apparent that Xbox players risked being banned on the platform whenever they tried to share the game’s raunchier content. Once again, Larian heard the community’s outcries and decided to step in, working with Microsoft to ensure that players’ sexy escapades could continue.

The enjoyment of a game as large as Baldur’s Gate 3 relies on players’ ability to know that the progress they make won’t be for nothing. I personally can’t believe it’s the year 2024, and a game not being able to register saves correctly has become such a thorn in both Microsoft and Larian Studios’ side – presumably through no fault of the latter. What should have been a cause for celebration when the Xbox version was announced at The Game Awards last year has swiftly turned into a nightmare.

The only thing that gives me pause about this forthcoming fix is that Larian doesn’t have total control over its implementation, and still can’t guarantee players that it’ll work. A reply to the studio’s initial Tweet made clear that the studio hasn’t “been able to independently verify this fix” itself and so is trusting “that Microsoft have gotten to the bottom of it”. Players will know for sure, apparently, from next Tuesday onwards.
