Jeremy Vine apologises to Channel 5 viewers over caller's explicit outburst

Jeremy Vine ended up apologising after a caller appeared to use explicit language on his show recently, though later shared that he couldn't "make out a single word" of the call.

The presenter, 58, fronted his eponymous Channel 5 show on Friday morning. He was joined on the episode by guests Kevin Maguire, Chloe Madeley and James Max, who were seen discussing various topics whilst on the panel last week. This included talking about whether Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would be able to win a general election against opposition leader Keir Starmer. Viewers were invited to contact the show to share their thoughts.

At one point, Jeremy introduced a caller who was referred to as Bob. Pausing discussion among the panellists to take the call, Jeremy said: "Let's go to Bob in Glasgow. Bob, you think [Rishi] can win it?"

The caller appeared to respond with explicit language, with his comment having been interpreted as: "F*** the Pope and the IRA!" The call seemed to then get cut off as some laughter was heard in the studio. Addressing the situation after it, Jeremy stated: "No idea. No idea what that is."

He went on to apologise in the case of any "bad language," telling viewers: "If there was any bad language in that we apologise profusely." Amid some comments from the panel, Jeremy said: "I couldn't understand what the guy said."

Further addressing viewers, he added: "We do everything we can to avoid any bad language on the programme, and we know it offends some viewers and it's rude to everyone when a caller can't control their language. So please, the gentleman who rang just then, don't call again."

Jeremy later tweeted about the situation. Alongside a clip of the call, which had been uploaded by a viewer to X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote about the situation a few days ago: "I've now listened to this 20 times and I still can't make out a single word of what this character was trying to say." The tweet has amassed more than a thousand likes on the platform and prompted reaction over the incident. One person described the situation as "shocking," whilst a few others wrote in their replies that it was "embarrassing".
