London is the European city to visit this year, according to the millions of reviewers on Tripadvisor.

The travel giant has broken down down the ratings and vast number of opinions from the many, many travellers who've had their say over the past year and crowned the English capital as one of the world's best in its Travellers’ Choice Awards.

While this may be a disappointment for the Brits from outside the M25 who consider London overpriced, unfriendly and well over-hyped, the 9 million people lucky enough to call the metropolitan utopia their home may welcome the news that they've correctly identified the place to be this year.

The nearest UK rival - Edinburgh - comes in at just twelfth place this year, while Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow and Leeds have not made it into the top 25.

According to the Tripadvisor reviewers, "London is many worlds in one". They add: "From Shoreditch’s swaggering style to Camden’s punky vibe and chic Portobello Road, the city’s energy means that no two days are the same. Explore royal or historic sites, tick off landmarks from your bucket list, eat and drink in exclusive Michelin-starred restaurants, enjoy a pint in a traditional pub, or get lost down winding cobbled streets and see what you stumble across – when it comes to London, the possibilities are endless."

It is hard to know how to begin describing a city that has been England's capital since 1066 (by some counts) and served as headquarters of an empire that stretched across a quarter of the world's landmass for hundreds of years.

In terms of obvious tourist attractions, London has an embarrassment of riches which include the London Eye, The O2 Arena, the London Dungeons, the Tower of London and Madame Tussauds. In terms of free attractions, the National Gallery, British Museum, British Library and a seat atop the bronze lions of Trafalgar Square are all big draws.

Between these obvious, show stopping attractions are a countless number of smaller, equally lovely treasures, from the Jewish Museum London in Camden, Hackney's charming Museum of the Home, and the knick-knack-filled Sir John Soane Museum.

Venture out from the centre of town and you'll find a bevvy of lovely walking routes that take you through the outer circles of the city. There are few better routes than the walk up the Lee Valley River from Limehouse Basin in the historic docklands all the way up to Waltham Abbey, where King Harold is believed to be laid to rest following his untimely death 950ish years ago.

If you have a few days to spare, then the London Outer Orbital Path, or LOOP, is a route which almost completely encircles Greater London. Nearly 150 miles are split into 24 sections between Erith station and Purfleet that plunge through the many lovely parts of the capital.
