Victoria Coren Mitchell has faced criticism from viewers over her answer on Only Connect.

The presenter of the popular BBC quiz show came under fire from fans after a confusing question was answered 'wrong'. She returned on Monday night to host the programme and ended up causing a stir online. During the semi-finals, the contestants had to figure out what the clues about Harry Potter characters meant.

The first clue read: "Grindelwald is the younger of the two main characters," as another clue was: "Fleur Delacour dates Grindelwald." A third clue stated: "Mad-Eye Moody is the older of the main characters," and the fourth: "Lord Voldermort is the boss of Grindelwald and Mad-Eye Moody".

The teams were then left trying to guess what the connection between the statements were. The answer was: "Wizarding World actors in In Bruges." After revealing the answer, Victoria told the contestants: "Let’s go through the actors from the Wizarding World, the world of Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and so on, do we know who plays Grindelwald?"

She told them: "It’s Colin Farrell, Fleur Delacour is Clemence Poésy. It’s actors who have appeared in In Bruges." However, viewers noticed a flaw in Victoria's explanation as they pointed out Colin Farrell didn't actually play Grindelwald. Taking to social media one fan said: "Nah, #onlyconnect, that Grindelwald question is b******s. Colin Farrell plays a disguised version in one film and has a different character name. Also Grindelwald is so played by Johnny Depp and Mads Mikkelsen. And I’m not even a fan, those films are trash."

Someone else wrote: "Haha. That’s exactly what I said. Technically Colin Farrell is does not play Grindelwald. It’s Johnny Depp or Mads Michelson. Question is wrong." Another added: "Hello #onlyconnect Colin Farrell actually played the character of Lord Percival Graves, who Grindelwald was disguised as. Grindelwald himself was played by Johnny Depp and then later Mads Mikkelsen. Sorry to call you out in public like this."

A fourth commented: "The Harry Potter/In Bruges question on #onlyconnect would’ve been clever if Colin Farrell had actually played Grindelwald? But he didn’t." Colin Farrell did appear in Harry Potter spin-off series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016. The film was set years before the Harry Potter series where Farrell played Percival Graves.

Johnny Depp played the role of Grindelwald. The confusion came as in the film, Eddie Redmayne's character Newt Scamander discovers Percival Graves is in fact Grindelwald in disguise. The final scene of the film shows Percival slowly turn into Grindelwald. Actor Johnny Depp did not return to play Grindelwald, as he was replace with Mads Mikkelsen.

The 2008 comedy In Bruges, Colin Farrell starred as Ray alongside Mad Eye Moody actor Brendan Cleeson as Ken Daley. Ralph Fiennes, who plays Voldermort, portrayed the two hitmen’s boss, with Clemence Poésy as Chloe Villette.
