A woman has saved $40,000 (£31,000) by leaving the United States to get her hair done, visit the dentist and get Botox.

Bryn Elise Wright, a 29-year-old Amazon reseller from Westminster, Colorado, had grown dismayed with the price of procedures in the United States when she started looking further afield. That’s when, in 2021, she decided to travel to Istanbul, Turkey and saved a staggering $4,000 (£3,100) on her hair extensions.

Wright said: “I was getting hair extensions done in Idaho – they had raised their prices to $4,500 (£3,500). It was astronomical. I started thinking about other options. I started looking abroad.

“I found a guy on Instagram that looked amazing. I reached out to him and he said he’d do it for $500. (£390) I thought there was a miscommunication at first. We worked it into our travel plans. It went wonderfully. I was blown away.”

Not every trip was deliberate, however. She chipped her tooth travelling in Bali and upon deciding to get the treatment done there she found herself spending just $70 (£55), rather than the $600 (£470) it would cost at home.

Following the undeniable success of her hair extensions, Bryn decided she would travel for more procedures. Returning to Turkey, she paid just $140 for Botox instead of $700 to $800 in the US. Paris, France was next on the list, as she saved over $1,500 on laser hair removal, with the bill coming in at just $400.

Bryn, who lives with her boyfriend Cody Jorgenson, 36, believes she has saved $40,000 in just three years by travelling abroad for health and beauty procedures.

Bryn added: “I thought I’m going to make a point of getting things done abroad. On hair extensions alone I’ve saved at least $10,000.

“That’s with me living it up and travelling. I’ve saved another $10k on dental treatments.”

The 29-year-old has also opted to undergo medical procedures abroad, including a new crown and deep cleaning in Turkey costing just $240, which would have cost $1,800 in the United States. The price difference was only hammered home when Bryn and her partner fell ill while in Thailand, spending a night in hospital for just $120. Bryn believes the same treatment would have cost anywhere between $10k and $20k in her home country.

She explained: “I wouldn’t have gone to hospital if I’d been at home.”

The last three years have seen the couple travel to 14 countries in total, saving “tonnes” of money in the process. “We’re onto something. People are blown away you get it that cheap,” she added.

Medical bills are notoriously expensive in the United States, with an overnight stay in hospital often setting Americans back by over $10,000 if they are without health insurance.
