Kate and William asked unlikely family member to help choose George's name
When it came to picking the perfect name for Prince William and Princess Kate's first child - they turned to a very unlikely family member for the daunting task.
Prince George was born in July 2013 and knowing he would one day be crowned King, finding the perfect name was going to be a big job.
The then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – now Prince and Princess of Wales – decided to enlist an important family member to help decide what the future King should be named. The couple asked their dog, Lupo, to choose their firstborn's name with a clever game, it was reported. Kate and William reportedly wrote all the possible names on scraps of paper and scattered them on the floor.
They then let Lupo into the room to pick and name and George was the one he went to, The Times reported.
It was further reported that Kate had her heart set on naming her first child Alexander before agreeing to George. Katie Nicholl, a royal expert, said: "Courtiers insisted the pair had not found out the sex of their unborn baby, and friends close to the couple claim William wanted a surprise. Although Kate apparently suspected it was a boy and had set her heart on the name Alexander, they had not yet decided what to call their firstborn."

The young royal sparked a mystery after telling a surprised dog walker that his name in fact wasn't George at all. The then five-year-old and his sister Princess Charlotte were reportedly walking with their doting nan, Carole Middleton, near the Middleton family home in Berkshire when the bizarre incident happened.
A woman who was out walking her pet says little George made a beeline to stroke her pup, and then oddly told her his new moniker - leaving her totally taken aback. She was even more stunned when later that year, his cousin was born with the name he clearly loved.
“I was asked by a police minder not to take a photo of the children, which I didn’t, but George started stroking my dog," said the lady, who asked not to be named. “Just to be friendly I engaged in a bit of small talk and I asked George what his name was, even though obviously I knew it.
"To my astonishment, he said ‘I’m called Archie’ with a big smile on his face. I don’t know why he calls himself Archie but kids often play with their names and I think it’s lovely," she told The Sun back in 2019, before saying that the adorable Prince seemed smitten with her dog.
Fast-forward a few years and it was revealed that George's classmates used to call him 'PG', a reference to his initials. And it seems that the name has since evolved to 'PG Tips', with George enjoying the nickname so much that he also goes as 'Tips' - even when he's at home with his family.
