January is here and with it comes a fresh slate - but the dreaded washing pile still remains a nightmare for many.

Now the Christmas decorations have been packed away for another year, households up and down the country will be giving their homes a big spritz. But there's some cleaning tasks that fill us with dread all year round.

One of the worst offenders is how quickly socks go from bright white to grubby brown, and the painful effort it takes to bring them back to life.

Thankfully, one woman took to the Mrs Hinch cleaning tips Facebook group to reveal the answer to all our washing prayers. And other cleaning fans raved about her tip.

One woman shared a post on the group, asking: "We were away at Christmas and my boys' white socks (about 12 pairs) have come back filthy. How can I make the soles white again without affecting the coloured parts at the top? Many thanks."

It didn't take long for cleaning fans to flood the comments with guidance and it turns out the trick is much easier than you think. One woman replied and suggested: "Quick normal wash to get the heavy stuff off (either by hand washing or in your washing machine). Then soak for 24 hours in Napisan. It's brilliant stuff (found in the baby aisle of the supermarket)."

They were not the only person to recommend Napisan which is a product used mostly to remove stains. Another person wrote: "Soak in Napisan then wash as normal with Napisan again." A third suggested: "Napisan or wonder soap rub it in and soak."

Others suggested some different products as somebody stated: "Spray with elbow grease, leave for 10mins. Put in wash add dish washer tablets."

Somebody else suggested Napisan could not be the best to use with white socks with logos on them as they said: "Vanish soak for colour I think Napisan might take colour out."
