Manchester United hotshot Hannibal Mejbri is at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war between Everton and Sevilla after the Red Devils decided to loan him out for the rest of this season.

Hannibal, 20, has found minutes hard to come by this season, having spent last term on loan at Birmingham City. The Tunisian midfielder scored his first Premier League goal in United's 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton in September, although he's been given just two top-flight starts by boss Erik ten Hag since.

Going into the January transfer window, Hannibal was targeted by three clubs: Spanish side Sevilla, German outfit Freiburg and French giants Lyon. But soon after it was reported that the 20-year-old had decided to join the La Liga strugglers, who are already on their fifth permanent manager this season, it emerged that Everton are currently attempting to hijack the loan move.

Before Everton made a move, a report from Italy claimed that United and Sevilla were set to discuss the terms of his loan and a potential permanent switch. The possibility of implementing a buy-back clause should the Red Devils want Hannibal back in the future was also mooted.

The decision is now up to Hannibal, who'd previously been looking at the prospect of becoming a free agent in June. On Thursday, however, Ten Hag confirmed that United had activated a clause in the former Monaco starlet's contract which extends his deal at Old Trafford until 2025.

Hannibal has made his name at United as a fiery character and in May 2022, he was involved in a training ground bust-up with one of his team-mates. It's alleged that the Tunisia international and left-back Alex Telles had a heated scrap which came during the final weeks of Ralf Rangnick's interim spell before Ten Hag arrived.

Earlier this season, Ten Hag was criticised for not giving Hannibal enough opportunities after a brief spell in the team over the autumn months. Ex- Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood told Sky Sports: "Hannibal [deservedly] got into that side. Say what you want about him and people will say, 'He's not a £100m player, he's not this or that' - but he went to Birmingham, worked hard on loan there, he came back and for me, he was Man of the Match in a couple of games.

"But as soon as someone else is fit, he is out the door. 'Sit on the bench, son'. Someone else comes in and strolls around the pitch, doesn't want to run around or get the ball back."
