Victoria Mary Clarke, the wife of late The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan, has claimed that his ghost contacted her over Christmas and urged her to play the guitar again, for the first time since his passing.

The legendary performer died from pneumonia, aged 65, at the end of November 2023 after a lengthy health battle which left him needing hospital treatment on a regular basis. He left behind his wife Victoria, who tied the knot in 2018 after they had been engaged for 11 years.

Victoria, an Irish-born journalist, 57, has shared in an emotional post her sadness over the festive period, especially on Christmas Day which was Shane's birthday, on which she said that she "[couldn't] stop crying" and asked her followers how others coped on days which were significant dates in the lives of those who had passed away.

She has also claimed that Shane contacted her between Christmas and New Year and that it encouraged her to pick up the guitar again, for the first time since Shane's death. Victoria said that she was 'nudged' several times by the ghost of Shane and she took this as a sign.

Victoria said about the contact: "I haven’t played my guitar since Shane died. But last night while I was trying to watch TV I kept getting nudges from him to open the drawer of his desk. I kept trying to ignore the nudges and I tried to keep watching TV but something wouldn’t let me and I had to get up and open the drawer. Inside the drawer was a plectrum, so I picked it up and then I picked up the guitar."

Not only was Shane giving her a 'nudge' to play again, Victoria said that he was also sending her musical ideas from "the other side" as she noodled with guitar. She said: "I played a few chords and it genuinely felt like there was an energy that was coming through and making up a tune. Who knows what we are capable of from the other side?"

It is not the first time that Victoria has spoken about Shane and his passing, and when writing in The Mail she said that he was "surrounded by thousands of angels" when he died. Victoria wrote: "He looked very peaceful and there was an immediate atmosphere of grace in the hospital room. He was surrounded by thousands of angels in the moment of his passing and they filled us all with love and peace."
