Ten Hag 'wants relegated Premier League flop' to solve Man Utd's striker problem

Manchester United are considering a move for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who previously failed to cut it in the Premier League.

The Cameroonian forward was on the books at Stoke City in 2018 when they were relegated from the top flight, although Choupo-Moting did score against United in a 2-2 draw despite the Potters heading for the second tier. Despite only scoring five times in England he landed himself a move to PSG.

He's since headed to Bayern Munich having shown himself to be a unique weapon in the final third and those exploits have grabbed Erik ten Hag's attention as he looks to solve his goalscoring problems with the likes of Rasmus Hojlund struggling in front of goal.

The Dane has only notched once in the league and only bottom sides Burnley and Sheffield United have scored fewer than United's tally of 22 - which could motivate them to dip into the market.

Choupo-Moting is one of four Bundesliga-based frontmen shortlisted by Man United, reports the Athletic. Bayern Munich icon Thomas Muller, Stuttgart sensation Serhou Guirassy and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner, formerly of Chelsea, are also on their radar.

Choupo-Moting will see his contract expire at the end of the season and has found starts hard to come by. A cut-price deal could be achieved by United should they pursue the 6ft 2ins striker, who has a season-best goal tally of 17, which he achieved in Germany.

Ten Hag spent big to land Hojlund in the summer despite reservations over his age and experience. His best performances have come in Europe, but in the league he had to wait until Boxing Day to score for the first time. United's other forwards have also struggled to fire.

Marcus Rashford has endured a steep decline since he produced career best figures last term. The academy graduate has notched just three times with their struggles in front of goal underlined by the fact midfielder Scott McTominay is their premier marksman with five goals.
