Getafe manager Pepe Bordalas claims Mason Greenwood was shown a red card against Rayo Vallecano after saying to the referee 'for f***'s sake'.

Greenwood, who is on loan at the Spanish club from Manchester United, was one of three home players dismissed in the 2-0 defeat. Juanmi Latasa was sent off for two yellows before half-time, while Damian Suarez was also shown a red by referee Jorge Figueroa after being substituted by the hosts.

A Sergio Camello double either side of the half-time interval was enough to give Rayo all three points at Coliseum Alfonso Perez. After the game, though, conversation inevitably turned towards Greenwood.

"The player told me that he said ‘for f***'s sake’, only that," Bordalas said after Greenwood was shown a straight red. "It was in frustration but at no point has he insulted anybody.”

"It was a comment, ‘for f***'s sake', why won’t you blow (the whistle),” Bordalas added. At the time, Getafe were already a man and two goals behind, and Suarez would later become the third player to incur the wrath of Figueroa.

The official referee's report claims that Greenwood was dismissed for raising his arm in the direction of the match official and stating "f*** you". It further adds: "Once expelled, he puts his finger to his temple, making a repeated gesture as a sign of disagreement with the decision made."

Getafe remain eighth after the defeat, with Rayo three points further back in 11th. However, Bordalas' side will now be without multiple players as they prepare to take on Osasuna in their next league outing on January 21.

Greenwood is spending the season on loan at Getafe, with Manchester United having conducted an internal enquiry regarding the 22-year-old after charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February.

"I have said my ideas and opinions but it's a club decision," United boss Erik ten Hag said over the summer. "We all have to accept that. I can't say so much about it, but what I say is I shared my opinion about it."

Greenwood has three goals and four assists in 15 La Liga outings for Getafe. He also scored twice on his Copa del Rey debut in a 12-0 victory over sixth-tier CF Tardienta.

According to The Sun, Getafe are keen to turn the loan move into a permanent swoop. Greenwood is said to be valued at around £40m, with United understood to prefer to keep the deal as a loan.

"We had a video conference a few days ago [with Manchester United]," Getafe president Angel Torres said in December (via Goal) as Greenwood returned to the UK over Christmas. "Almost every month we talk to see how he is. The boy is super happy. Now he is there, in England. The family too. They know we are interested in him staying one more year and I think we are on the right track."
