Any Ivan Toney move away from Brentford in January will NOT see Peterborough land a reported mammoth pay day.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has denied claims that his club would benefit via a 30 percent sell on clause, in any deal that would see Toney move this month. Toney is being eyed by Arsenal and Chelsea, with both sides looking to sign a striker in the January transfer window.

Brentford are reluctant to sell a player who joined the Bees from Posh for £10million in the summer of 2020. He has since proven to be a reliable goalscorer for Thomas Frank's men, and has since been capped by England. It was suggested on on Tuesday that Peterborough and another of Toney's former clubs, Newcastle United, would benefit financially should a deal be struck.

Given fees for Toney are being mooted in the £60million-plus mark - with Bees boss Frank insisting he'd like £100million for his side's talisman - the League One side would be in line for a bumper payday. Unfortunately for fans of Peterborough, MacAnthony has denied any existence of such a clause.

"Complete misinformation. That even had me double checking the contract just now & the sell on clause. Nobody pays £10million for a L1 signing & pays 30% sell on… nobody," he tweeted.

There are major challenges ahead for whichever team wants to pursue a move for Toney. Brentford boss Frank has insisted that he does not want to lose the 27-year-old this month.

“Even if we had everyone available and we had won five in a row, or if we had a few players out and lost a few games, I would always look forward to Ivan coming back. He is needed as a character, a leader and a good player," he said. "Is he raring to go? Oh yeah, definitely. To get Ivan back will be like signing an unbelievably good Premier League striker that has proven (himself) in the Premier League. We are looking forward to that.

"I really, really would like to keep him. As a coach I'd love to have my best players with me all the time. From my perspective, I don't want to sell him because I think he's fantastic."

Despite Frank's reluctance to sell, a striker is Arsenal's top priority for the January window. However, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher doubts they will be able to spend big this month though, having payed out hefty fees in recent years.

"They have spent a lot of money in the last few years, they brought in the goalkeeper from Brentford and that is getting paid next season so, I think it is going to be tough to bring someone of the quality who is actually better than them," he told Sky Sports.

"To find someone better than them is very difficult. I am not quite sure where they get them from but if they don’t in January or the summer, it is going to be very difficult for them to overrule Manchester City."
