Erik ten Hag’s underperforming Manchester United squad is set for a major revamp in 2024, with up to 10 flops and fringe players set to leave between now and the end of the season.

And that is before including Donny van de Beek, who joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan within a few hours of the January window opening.

With Sir Dave Brailsford getting stuck in just over a week on from confirmation of INEOS’ arrival as part-owners, United have already taken the decision not to extend the contracts of French duo Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane beyond the season, while several others should not be expecting a new deal.

Here are the players currently under contract with no long-term future at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane

The World Cup winner’s fall from grace has been spectacularly fast. Having arrived at the beginning of last season, it looked like Varane would be one of the first names on Ten Hag’s team sheet this season.

Except talk of a dressing room rift, injuries and a notable dip in form when on the pitch has led United to decide not to pick up the one-year option on his contract. Varane could go this month if a buyer is willing to stump up a decent fee.

Anthony Martial

The forward has never lived up to his potential and the time has finally arrived for him to move on having arrived to huge hype in 2015. Martial, 28, has scored once in 13 league appearances and fans have become increasingly frustrated by his poor work ethic.

Again, if an offer was to arrive this month United would likely accept. Otherwise he is walking out on a free at the end of June.

Jadon Sancho

A bit trickier because he is under contract until the summer of 2026 but the stand off with Ten Hag will only end when one of them leaves. And while the head coach is under severe pressure, INEOS may also have their mind made up by Sancho’s indifferent form before he was jettisoned from the squad.

It is unclear what fee they would deem acceptable but for a £71 million signing who has not built on his early promise.

Sofyan Amrabat

Signed on loan from Fiorentina at the end of the summer window with a view to staying permanently. But the Morocco midfielder has been a massive disappointment and there is a growing sense that United will try to back out of any agreement to keep him on after his loan stint.

Sergio Reguilon

The left back is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and there are questions over whether United can - or even want - to make it permanent.

Jonny Evans

The veteran centre back, who turns 36 on Wednesday, was a surprise return in the summer and viewed as a back-up option. He has made a dozen league appearances already and performed solidly but to keep the Northern Irishman on board next season would be a significant sign that the squad remains miles off being a genuine challenger.

Shola Shoretire

Academy graduate spent last season on loan at Bolton in League One but has no prospect of being a first string regular and will leave once his deal expires in June.

Brandon Williams

Full back is on loan at Ipswich and his terms expire at the end of the campaign. There are no plans to put a new contract on the table.

Tom Heaton

The veteran back-up goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season and there is currently no sign of a short extension.

Alvaro Fernandez

On loan at La Liga surprise package Girona and out of contract in June. There appears to be a slim chance of him making a first-team breakthrough.
