Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher reached a rare point of agreement on Monday night when debating the Premier League manager of the season so far.

The pair were on duty on January 1 on Sky Sports, as Liverpool beat Newcastle 4-2 to go three points clear at the top of the table. It's a position that represents a defying of the odds from Jurgen Klopp's side, who have had to deal a summer overhaul of their squad and ongoing injury issues.

However, it wasn't the German boss who the two former defenders later touted as their man of the campaign. That honour went to Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, who lie just three points off the Reds after their weekend win over Burnley.

Neville was swift with his verdict when asked, replying with: “Definitely Unai Emery so far. Definitely." And his co-pundit didn't argue, despite also touting another candidate.

“I’m the same," said Carragher. "I think Gary O’Neil has been sensational. When I look at Wolves in the table, they’ve probably been there before under Nuno. When I look at Aston Villa and where they are now, it feels like it’s been a really long time. So I go for Unai Emery, manager. of the year.”

Indeed, Villa have proved the surprise package thus far, firmly in the title picture despite stuttering over the festive period. A 1-1 home draw with Sheffield United was followed by a 3-2 defeat at Manchester United, and that was after leading 2-0 at half time.

It seemed there would be further dropped points on Saturday, locked at 2-2 with the Clarets in the dying moments. But an 89th minute penalty from Douglas Luiz settled matters, and also maintained the club's remarkable run of home form.

Neville and Carragher weren't on the same page when it came to selecting their best XI of the season so far though. The duo argued over Neville's decision to omit Cole Palmer, with the former Man United man then hitting out over his colleague not picking Rodri.

"Rodri is the best midfield player in the world in his position," he ranted. "They've won two trophies already this season. I can't believe you wouldn't pick him."
