A EuroMillions winner has said she is "absolutely devastated" after her former partner was shot dead during a Hogmanay party last night.

Jane Park's ex Marc Webley was gunned down on New Year's Eve, just before midnight, outside a pub in Trinity, Edinburgh. Armed police swooped but, despite the best efforts of paramedics, the 36-year-old man died of his injuries.

Writing on social media, Jane, 27, who reportedly split with Marc just three weeks ago, said today: "I can’t believe I’m writing this, we spoke yesterday. If I could cuddle you again and tell you everything is going to be okay, I would give anything to do it Marc.

"The months we spent together, you taught me some valuable things in life and I will never forget you. I am absolutely devastated. The best bed for you is up there. My handsome."

Marc, who was partying with pals last night, was last year cleared of attempted murders at the high court. The gangland figure had reportedly told close pals he was expecting an attack and had been carrying weapons wherever he went. He was accused last year of trying to ram a car off the road in Edinburgh, charges acquitted in court.

Jane, who won big on the Lotto game in 2013 when she was just 17, left a single love heart as a tribute on a tribute photograph shared on social media when news of the tragedy emerged today.

And Marc's older brother Don also posted a picture of the man on social media, and followers rushed to offer their condolences. Don responded with heart emojis, reports Daily Record.

Gangland sources told the publication: "Don posted on his Facebook that Marc went the day he wanted, the way he wanted and then laid down the gauntlet by saying 'come and get it.' There are going to be wars in the city if Marc has been murdered."

Police have locked down West Granton Road and Granton Crescent while they carry out their investigations in Trinity. Locals have reported hearing gunshots around the time of the incident.

One said: "I thought it was fireworks at first then saw all the blue lights, ambulances and armed police. It was bedlam just before the bells." Another said: "The police were on the scene really quickly after the shots were heard. People were screaming and all hell let loose. There are rumours four people are involved but Marc is dead. He had more enemies than Putin."

Police Scotland said an "incident" is being investigated, with parts of West Granton Road and Granton Crescent sealed off. The force said: “Road closures are in place on Granton Road and Granton Crescent following an incident which was reported to police around 11.50pm on Sunday, 31 December. Officers are at the scene and closures will remain in place while enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances."

Following the fatal shooting in Edinburgh on New Year’s Eve, a senior police officer said “everything possible” is being done to find those responsible.

Detective Superintendent Graham Grant said: “This is believed to have been a targeted incident and our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of both men involved.

“Inquiries are at a very early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened, and while officers have already gathered CCTV and spoken to various people who were in the area at the time, I’d urge anyone with information who hasn’t yet spoken to us to come forward. In particular if anyone has private CCTV, doorbell footage or dashcam of the Granton Crescent/Road area around the time of the incident, please bring it to our attention.

“This incident will undoubtedly have caused concern in the local community and officers will be carrying out extra patrols of the area and I’d like to reassure the public that everything possible is being done to trace whoever is responsible.”

In 2005, Webley and James Tant were each sentenced to 11 years at Glasgow High Court for attempted murder in Edinburgh earlier that year. Webley, who was 19 at the time, shot another man in Granton in what was described as a failed gangland hit.
