Jimmy Carr fears all human life could be wiped out by Artificial Intelligence and thinks we’re running out of time to act.

The 51-year-old comedian has been left concerned by The Precipice - a book written by Australian philosopher Toby Ord. The book makes the claim that there is a one in 10 chance humanity will be wiped out by rogue AI that decides to kill mankind.

The philosopher, who is a research fellow at Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute where he founded his troubling ideas, also estimates a fatal battle with AI will take place within the next 100 years - and pose a greater risk to humanity than climate change. Toby’s theories have left Jimmy deeply alarmed and he is speaking out to warn the world before it’s too late.

Jimmy doesn’t undermine the risks of climate change - hinting that he believes humanity could adapt to it - but he fears the worst while thinking about AI. And it seems he has taken the words of Toby deeply to hear.

Opening up to the Daily Star, the comedian said: “The climate crisis is on the list, he goes, ‘Yeah it’s bad but it won’t wipe us out, it won’t wipe out humanity, AI could wipe out humanity’.”

He goes on to say that he thinks present day society might not stand much chance when the time comes to fight killer AI - as he thinks the public are too pacifist and opt for appeasement when really war should be used to defend life. Thinking back to the events of World War II, he said: “I think we’ve kind of slightly lost our stomach for what had to be done then. It does strike me that we’ve lost history.

“If you don’t really understand what happened it’s very difficult to only judge it by today’s standards. If we had to step to the Nazis today, would people be calling for peace? Or would they go, ‘We’ve got to absolutely wipe them out’.”

Away from panicking fans about the end of the world, Jimmy has been dividing fans due to his latest comedy effort. The star drew attention for all the wrong reasons in September when a Netflix special was dropped on the streaming service - but was panned by viewers.

In his stand up, Jimmy predicts the material could lead to him being cancelled, as he quipped: “What I'm saying onstage tonight is barely acceptable now. In ten years' time, f**king forget about it." His jokes about gender and One Direction ultimately landed flat with viewers.

One follower wrote: "When you confuse lack of laughter because it's bad, to lack of laughter because it's edgy." Another quipped: "When do the dark jokes start?" with someone else echoing their sentiment, asking: "Was this whole bit AI generated?"

Others suggested the jokes were outdated and belong in 2005, with an X user writing: "One Direction split jokes in 2023. That's some fresh, innovative stuff. And that non-binary one, how did you come up with that, no one else is doing that! Proper edgy. Well done."
