Traffic police pulled over one of Britain's worst drivers who has 96 points on his licence at the age of 23.

Officers stopped the Vauxhall Astra in Stoke-on-Trent on Boxing Day after it flagged up as being uninsured. They discovered the driver was already disqualified and had a whopping points total to his name. Staffordshire Police seized the vehicle and reported him for driving without insurance and driving while disqualified following the incident on Christine Street in Bucknall in the north-east of the city.

The unnamed man was given a further extension to his driving ban - meaning he is now disqualified until 2027. The force said they would also be liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service about a possible prison sentence for the driver. People can be disqualified from driving for six months for building up 12 or more penalty points within three years, with the limit dropping to six points for new drivers.

He faces a 12-month ban if they pick up a second disqualification within three years and a two-year ban if they get a third disqualification. Sharing details of the incident on X, formerly Twitter, Staffordshire Police Roads Policing Unit said: "Unbelievably this chap had 96 points already on his licence.

"We will be asking the CPS to make representations for a custodial sentence due to the clear lack of care for the law." When asked by a web user how someone can have this many points, the force replied: "By just ignoring any punishment and continuing to drive, gets caught and keeps getting more and more points."

Another social media user commented: "96!!!!!! How the hell can that happen and a custodial not? Should be banned from driving for life after a few years inside." One person said: "96. Boy that must be the record." And another put: "It beggars belief how can he amass 96 points and still driving."
