Colby Covington has blamed his support of Donald Trump for his UFC world title defeat against Leon Edwards.

Edwards defended his UFC welterweight title with a one-sided decision win against Covington in Las Vegas earlier this month. Covington was fighting for the first time in over 18-months and he failed to ever get into the fight, with Edwards easily staying on the outside and breaking him down from range. All three judges scored the fight 49-46 in favour of Edwards after five rounds.

Covington is an avid supporter of former US President Trump, who was cageside to support him at the world title fight. "They hate me because I support Trump," Covington alleged whilst talking with Jesse Waters Primetime. "If it's in a judging position, in a fight or any type of athletic sporting event, they're going to stack the deck against us, so it's a sad time in our country, but we the people need to rise up, and we can't let this keep us down.

"I deserve [a rematch]. I think I broke my foot in the first 30 seconds of the fight, kicking it on his elbow, so I want a rematch with this guy. I'm going to come back stronger. I'm just like the American people. You know, we never give up, you can knock us down, but we just learn. We don't lose, we only learn. We come back stronger."

Covington is a notorious trash-talker and he made an ugly remark before the fight about Edwards' late father, who was murdered when he was just 13. Covington said he even sought upon Trump for advice on how to beat Edwards, despite the former President having no fighting experience.

"He told me to get on him early and put that cardio on him, that I could take him down at will. It took me a little bit to get going, my timing was not there early on. I still thought I did enough to win, God bless Donald Trump for everything he's done for this country. He is the greatest American and greatest President in history," Covington said.

There was no love lost between Edwards and Covington after the fight, as the Brit hadn't forgotten about his rival's pre-fight taunt. "This guy used my dad's death as entertainment. He used my dad's murder as entertainment, and it took a lot for me to calm down, stay focused and come win this fight. He’s a great competitor, just a dirty human being," Edwards said.
