A murder investigation has been launched after a car ploughed into a crowd of people in Sheffield, leaving a man dead and numerous people injured.

One victim is in a serious condition in hospital, police say. A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and another man, aged 55, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Both are in police custody.

Emergency services were called to College Close in the city just after 2pm on Wednesday, following reports of violence and disorder. As the call was under way, a car collided with a group of people outside a property in Burngreave, South Yorkshire Police reported.

A 46-year-old man died at the scene and numerous others were injured. The next of kin of the man who was killed have been informed and are currently being supported by officers, according to police. Witnesses told the Sheffield Star they saw up to eight police vehicles heading to the scene. They were reportedly joined by a fire engine and ambulance.

Senior investigating officer DCI Andrew Knowles said: “We are now dealing with a murder investigation and understand the distress this will cause to those directly affected and the wider community. We have a large cordon in the area and are conducting CCTV and house to house enquiries. We’ll be patrolling throughout the night to offer reassurance and to speak to anyone who may hold information or feel concerned.”

Police appealed to anyone with information that could help their enquiries to report it to them online or by calling 101. Officers said they were also keen to hear from nearby residents who had CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage.
