Mel Schilling is home for Christmas after undergoing an operation to remove a tumour.

The Married At First Sight dating coach was worried she would be forced to spend Christmas Day in hospital after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Mel revealed to her fans last week that she had received the diagnosis after growing concerned following stomach pains.

In a heartwarming update, Mel revealed she came home for Christmas to spend the day with her family, after surgery to remove a cancerous tumour in her colon. The Married At First Sight relationships expert, 51, had thought she would spend the day in Kingston Hospital, south-west London.

In an Sunday Instagram post, Mel wrote “Driving home for Christmas”, with a photo of her husband Gareth and eight-year-old daughter Madison wearing Christmas jumpers. Mel's famous pals rushed to share their support with the dating coach as Kate Lawler commented: "The best news. Merry Christmas to you all x."

Celebs Go Dating relationship expert Anna Williamson said: "Fantastic news Mel have the most restful day surrounded by your loved ones," while former Married At First Sight UK star Thomas Hartley commented with a series of red love hearts.

Mel, who is a relationship expert on both the UK and Australian version of the E4 show, revealed on Friday that her surgery "couldn't have gone any better". She wrote: “Terry, you are the weakest link…goodbye! So yesterday lunchtime I had keyhole surgery to remove my tumour (AKA Terry) and in the words of my amazing surgeon it couldn’t have gone any better!

“Crucially the cancer hadn’t spread to my abdominal cavity, which was our greatest fear but was entirely localized in my colon. Over the coming days I will discuss my treatment plan going forwards but suffice to say that Terry is toast!”

The reality star went on to say she has been “absolutely blown away” by the “countless messages of support” received. “I am so very touched and can honestly say it’s made a difference, so thank you all,” she said.

The dating coach and reality TV star revealed her cancer diagnosis in an Instagram post on Wednesday. She explained she had started to develop “severe stomach cramps on set” while filming in Australia and visited her GP in Sydney, who put it down to constipation and gave her some laxatives.

Mel explained she felt something wasn't right and booked a scan on her return to the UK which detected colon cancer and "a tumour that, had it gone undetected for much longer, would have killed me".
