Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is closing in on a return to management, with the former Manchester United man the favourite to take over at Besiktas.

The Super Lig outfit are already searching for their third manager of the season, after Riza Calimbay was sacked after only seven games in charge. And according to reports in Turkey, Solskjaer is their preferred option after holding talks with the club.

Besiktas currently lie fifth in their top-flight league, but are a full 17 points off leaders Fenerbahce. And club bosses are unhappy at what they deem a lacklustre fight for both the title and Champions League qualification.

Solskjaer, 50, has been out of work since he was sacked by Manchester United midway through the 2021/22 season. He spent three years at the helm at Old Trafford, initially only taking temporary charge after the departure of Jose Mourinho.

During his tenure, the Norwegian led his side to a Europa League final and second placed finish in the Premier League. But he did so amid ample cynicism from pundits and rival fans, who accused the club of simply rewarding him with the role because of his iconic status at United as a player.

He was eventually sacked after his team conceded 15 times in five league games, which included a harrowing 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool. But should he take the job in Turkey, he will be reunited with one star who played under him in Manchester.

Eric Bailly was at the club throughout Solskjaer's time in charge, but his appearances were limited by form and fitness issues. Erik ten Hag opted to loan him out to Marseille last season, before Besiktas seemingly gave him a career lifeline last summer.

However, Bailly managed eight games in all competitions before a Besiktas statement announced that he and four other players had been removed from the squad. The statement cited "poor performance and incompatibility with the team," seemingly leaving the Ivorian centre-back in limbo.

Bailly, 29, will now hope that being reunited with Solskjaer will offer him a lifeline ahead of the January transfer window. His contract at the club expires at the end of the campaign.
