Brits might be able to swap their umbrellas for sunglasses on Boxing Day - as sunny intervals will hit several areas in the country.

It comes as new weather maps have revealed that locations across the UK will experience sunshine and mild temperatures the day after Christmas. However, in the run-up to festivities, people based in the south of England have been warned about rain or drizzle, while northern England and Scotland have been told to brace themselves for fierce wind on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

There is also a chance of snow over the mountains of Scotland. But there should be an improvement in conditions by Boxing Day, which will be short-lived as the rain is expected to return the following day.

According to the latest Met Office weather maps, those who get up bright and early will be welcomed by the sun. As from 9am, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Belfast and Manchester could all experience bright skies and sunny intervals.

Meanwhile, the maps show cities such as London, Cardiff and Plymouth will continue to be covered in clouds. The forecaster earlier revealed that Brits could see the warmest Christmas Day on record as the highest temperatures could reach a staggering 13C or 14C.

Meteorologist Liam Eslick said: "It's looking like a damp picture across the UK, heavy rain possibly in Wales, past Christmas lunch there could be some breaks if people are looking to go out and about. Boxing Day is probably going to be the best day if people are looking to go for a walk."

Two yellow wind warnings have been issued with forecasters warning Brits that flooding is also possible. The warnings are in place until 6pm on Christmas Eve. Mr Eslick added: "People travelling on roads should take care and stay away from high-sided vehicles and, for people who are at home and are going for walks, stay away from coasts."

The weather forecast is as follows:

Sunday:

Cloudy Christmas Eve in the south with rain or drizzle. Brighter elsewhere with sunny spells and showers, heavy at times. Mild, but very windy - especially northern England and Scotland.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

An unsettled Christmas Day with rain and strong winds, plus snow over the mountains of Scotland. Calmer for Boxing Day with some sunshine, but rain returns for Wednesday.
