A viral TikTok has claimed to show how Target's Asset Protection team secretly track down suspected thieves and follow them round the store.

The man behind the camera held a walkie-talkie in his car and listened in to their radio channel as they talked about a customer who they believed was planning on shoplifting goods from the store. They began making note of each item the woman had in her cart which included diapers, pants and kitchenware.

As time progressed they began to grow more and more suspicious of the woman as she moved through the store. "Look up her previous incidents and see how hard she would go if you can," said one team member when he saw the shopper acting oddly. It emerged that the shopper had a history of stealing from the store, the workers claimed over the walkie talkie.

"She's heading towards bedding, kind of," said one before his colleague responded: "Copy, I'm going to try to regain visual. I don't want to get close because I know she already saw me in 'Boys'." It is unclear which Target store was in the video nor which city and state it is located in.

The video gained widespread attention and divided viewers, with some very disturbed by the idea that they could be being stalked when walking around the store even if wrongly suspected of theft. Posted on Wednesday, the TikTok has amassed over 2.5 million views.

"This explains the debilitating pressure I feel to put things back where I got them even if I change my mind on the other side of the store," said one commenter on TikTok. Another user said: "This is creepy. I hate shopping at Target now. It didn't used to feel this way, but I can tell who is obviously with LP now and who is spying." A third shared: "I have thyroid issues and I'm always sweating and looking like I'm having a meltdown. I've always wondered if they think I'm stealing."

But some were less concerned and even shared stories of having been targeted despite not committing a crime. "Me who's never shoplifted a day in my life, but am always paranoid, when I have no clue what I want and wandering aimlessly, that LP is watching me," said one user who saw the lighter side of the situation. "No wonder why asset protection was eyeing me down when I couldn't decide whether or not I need to try the elf grip primer or the putty one," said another.

Target has recently been clamped down on shoplifting but says it still faces a "significant financial headwind" due to those who steal from its stores. "We think progress there probably doesn't happen quickly," said chief financial officer Michael Fiddelke on a call with Wall Street analysts. The store has been moving to close down locations where lots of thefts take place.
