Mystery car owner delivers poison pen letter to all his neighbours
A furious car owner sent poison pen letters to all his neighbours threatening to block their cars in over a parking row - signing off all his notes 'MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU GRINCH'.
Wayne Whitehead and his wife Lorna Hallsworth-Whitehead were shocked when they came home to find the 'aggressive' note pushed through their letterbox on Wednesday [December 13th]. The bemused 43-year-old found himself entangled in a row over parking that erupted when a 'fussy' neighbour asked a car owner to not park on the grass. The original note, written in capitals and left on the car, politely asked the driver to 'please kindly refrain from parking on the grass verge' as it would make it look 'unsightly'.
However the 'triggered' car owner photocopied this note and added their own furious reply that they then posted to the entire row of neighbours. It demanded the culprit 'never put something on their new car as it is private property' before delcaring they can 'park where they want' as they pay their road tax. It warned they would 'double park so you can't get out' next time, before signing off the angry note 'Merry Christmas you Grinch!'.
But as the recipient of the initial letter didn't know who posted the request on the car, they sent the mean missive to the entire street including to the dad-of-two. The baffled baker said the unpleasant letter made him and his 38-year-old data analyst wife Lorna chuckle but that others living nearby, including those with dementia, found it upsetting and confusing.
Wayne, from Glossop, Derbyshire, said: "My wife had just got home from work and she said 'oh we've just had this through the door'. She couldn't believe it when she read it. She parks on the drive. It wasn't us, I knew that we'd not put a note on anyone's car. I'm up and out early in the morning and she's sorting the kids out for school. We haven't got time to put notes on cars. We have an inkling which neighbour it is [who left the first note]. We [know someone] who's a bit fussy, [the] garden's all prim and proper, and who doesn't like to see cars parked on the verges because, quite rightly, it damages them.

"Whoever has the car parked, they shouldn't have been parked there and turfing up the grass but in this day and age would you be bothered? It gets annoying when people do park like that but personally I wouldn't waste my time writing a letter. There's more important things going on in the world. It's obviously triggered someone, then they've gone back in their house, hand wrote that letter, photocopied it and delivered it to all the houses."
The beef was over a parking row (Kennedy News and Media)The estate opposite Wayne's road has been having resurfacing work, so many cars are choosing to park on the road instead.
While he found the letter funny, others in the area were distressed by it.
Wayne said: "For me, it's just a laugh. It made me chuckle, especially the 'Merry Christmas you Grinch', but some other neighbours have been upset by it.
Another said it confused and upset their relative on the road who struggles with dementia. "It's not threatening but it's a little bit aggressive, saying 'if it is you, I'm going to double park and block you in'. [The original note was] quite polite, just asking them not to park on the grass verge. They're only saying 'please have a bit of consideration where you park, you're damaging the grass'."
Wayne hopes to encourage his neighbours to be more easygoing and forgiving of each other. Wayne said: "It definitely is the car owner in the wrong. "[In the letter] they're saying 'you can't touch my car, it's private property' yet they're walking down people's private drives and putting notes in their private letterboxes. It's not even anything to do with me. Everyone should just be a bit more easy going with your neighbours and a bit more forgiving."
The original note, written in capitals and left on the car, read: "Would you please kindly refrain from parking on the grass verge, as it will rut the surface and make it look unsightly. Thank you."
The 'triggered' car owner photocopied this note and added a reply that they then posted to the entire row of neighbours: "If this was you, first and foremost do not ever put something on my new car as it is private property. Secondly, I pay road tax and can park where I want! And finally, we have nowhere to park due to road works in the village as they have dug the whole pavement up and I will not park a "white" car to get splashes of concrete on it, which you can not get! It's not your grass, next time I will double park so you can't get out. Merry Christmas you Grinch!"
