Here is some heartwarming proof that Britain really is a nation of animal lovers. Generous folk have raised nearly £5,000 so this wobbly kitten with “back-to-front legs” can learn to walk.

Seven-month-old Phoebe was born with no hips and over-sized hind legs making it appear as though they are the wrong way round..

Workers at Severn Valley Rescue in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, launched an online appeal to raise money to help Phoebe after taking her in this month.

Incredibly, after less than a week the centre has raised £4,600 which will cover X-rays, CT scans and orthopaedic care.

Further funding could be needed if Phoebe requires surgery to fix her deformed limbs.

Amanda Ball, of Severn Valley Rescue, said: "We have recently taken in the sweetest little kitten after her owner could not afford to take her to the vet to get her treated.

"Phoebe was born with an extremely rare condition where she is missing her hip joints and her legs joints are hyper-extended - making it appear as though her back legs are on the wrong way round.

"We are hoping to raise enough money to get the surgical team at Southwater Vets in Telford to X-ray, scan and operate and hopefully, get this beautiful little creature back on all four feet again."

Despite her wonky appearance, the kitten is not in any pain and is adored by the rescue centre staff.

Amanda added: “She purrs all the time, you stroke her - she purrs, you pick her up - she purrs, you smile at her - she purrs.

"She's a noisy little engine of fuzz. We just adore her.”

Britain's loneliest dog faces spending his second Christmas in kennels unless someone offers him a forever home. Zeke, a nine-year-old crossbreed dog has spent more than 600 days waiting for a new home.

RSPCA team leader Daniel Cartwright said: "He’s a sweet, older gentleman who thinks he’s a lap dog and he absolutely loves fuss and affection.

"He really is the perfect dog, and his new family will be rewarded with a great sofa snuggler and a wonderful companion. We’re at a bit of a loss as to why he’s being overlooked.”

Keeping your pets safe this Christmas

We all want Christmas to be fun for everyone, including our pets, but visitors and changes to their routine can be overwhelming.

Make sure dogs have a safe space so they can escape for some downtime away from all the noise. Try and stick to their routine as much as you can, including exercise, and keep an eye out for any signs of stress.

Be careful with crackers - the bang can be upsetting for pets.

And don’t forget, some of our festive favourites can be dangerous for dogs, including grapes and raisins, chocolate, some nuts, onions and garlic, alcohol and cooked bones.

Chocolate, onions and alcohol are also poisonous for cats, along with some plants and flowers, especially lilies.
